GEICO vs USAA

Both are A++ direct writers with military roots. USAA tops J.D. Power but is limited to the military community; GEICO is open to everyone.

Verdict

USAA and GEICO have more in common than most pairs. Both were founded to serve a particular group: GEICO started in 1936 to insure government employees and military personnel, and USAA in 1922 for Army officers. Both sell direct, online, in an app and by phone, and both hold AM Best's top A++ (Superior) rating: GEICO affirmed April 2026, USAA June 2026. GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, wrote $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55%). USAA, a member-owned reciprocal exchange, wrote $22.96 billion (6.18%).

The decisive difference is eligibility. Only active-duty and reserve members, honorably discharged veterans, certain cadets and candidates, and the spouses and children of USAA members can buy USAA. For those who can, its customer scores are the best J.D. Power publishes. It outscored every ranked insurer in all 11 regions of the 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, and it scored 741 in the 2025 claims study, against GEICO's 697. USAA isn't rank-eligible because membership is restricted. GEICO is open to everyone, and it still courts the military with deployed-driver discounts of up to 25% and a dedicated military phone line.

If you qualify for USAA, quote it. Then quote GEICO too, since military discounts and individual rating factors can change which company comes out ahead.

Choose GEICO if

  • You aren't eligible for USAA. GEICO sells to anyone in all 50 states and D.C.

  • You want mechanical breakdown insurance on a new car.
  • You'd like the option of a local GEICO office as well as online service.

Choose USAA if

  • You or a parent or spouse qualifies. USAA had the top published J.D. Power scores in every region in 2026.
  • You may store a car during deployment (vehicle storage discount up to 60%) or garage it on base (up to 15% off comprehensive).
  • You might move overseas on permanent change of station orders and want overseas coverage.
  • You want car replacement assistance, which pays 20% more than a totaled car's actual cash value.
  • You want both a safe-driving program and a mileage-based one (SafePilot and SafePilot Miles).
