State Farm vs The Hartford

The Hartford's AARP program adds benefits for older drivers like RecoverCare; State Farm offers local agents and stronger regional satisfaction scores.

Verdict

State Farm and The Hartford are both A+ (Superior) rated by AM Best. The Hartford was affirmed in July 2026. State Farm was downgraded to A+ from A++ in November 2025. They also tied in the J.D. Power 2025 claims study at 716, 8th of 20. The real difference is who they are built for. State Farm, a mutual and the largest U.S. auto insurer, wrote $69.16 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (18.61%) through more than 19,200 captive agent offices. The Hartford, publicly traded, wrote $2.32 billion (0.62%), mostly through the AARP Auto Insurance Program it has run since 1984. It sells direct to AARP members by phone and online, with independent agents also available.

The Hartford's policy is designed around later life. It offers RecoverCare for home help after a crash injury, new car replacement and lifetime repair assurance at authorized shops. It also has a Disappearing Deductible, and accident forgiveness after five accident-free years. AARP members get up to 10% off. State Farm's strengths are its local agents, its regional satisfaction scores and its scale. It beat the regional average in nine of 11 regions in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. The Hartford placed fourth in the Southwest but was below average in Florida, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northwest.
