Overview

AssuranceAmerica is an Atlanta-based nonstandard auto insurer for drivers who have been turned down elsewhere or priced out because of accidents, violations or a lapse in coverage. It ranked #55 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $477.7 million, or 0.13% of the national market.

The insurer, AssuranceAmerica Insurance Company, belongs to the privately held AssuranceAmerica Group, which also runs a commercial auto business. Policies are sold through more than 9,500 independent agents and online. Personal auto is offered in 13 states, mostly in the South and Midwest, and renters insurance is also sold in Kansas. The company emphasizes speed and simplicity: it says a quote takes about 90 seconds, it does not check credit scores, and coverage can start the same day.

History

AssuranceAmerica dates its business to 1999. Its SEC filings explain the structure. The public holding company, originally incorporated in Utah in 1969, entered insurance in 1998 through a retail agency, TrustWay. In 1999 it formed AssuranceAmerica Managing General Agency, LLC, which at first ran a Georgia nonstandard auto program for another insurer, Gateway Insurance Company of St. Louis. In late 2002 it created its own insurer, AssuranceAmerica Insurance Company, a South Carolina company, and stopped working for Gateway in 2003. In 2011 it sold the TrustWay retail agencies. At the end of that year it was selling through about 2,700 independent agencies in 10 states.

The company was publicly traded until 2013. A 1-for-10,000 reverse stock split, effective March 11, 2013, cashed out holders of fewer than 10,000 shares at $0.04 per pre-split share. It then deregistered with the SEC on March 26, 2013, completing its move to private ownership.

Guy Millner, chairman and chief executive in 2011, is now co-founder and executive chairman of AssuranceAmerica Group. Joe Skruck, also a co-founder, is the group's president and CEO. Scott Pitrone is president and CEO of AssuranceAmerica Corporation, the insurance business. The company says it gives 5% of its profits to charity through what it calls The Generous Policy.

Auto insurance coverage

AssuranceAmerica's personal auto policy offers liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist and personal injury protection, where states require or allow it. Buyers can choose state-minimum limits or full coverage, and the company files SR-22 certificates for drivers who need them. Spanish-speaking representatives are available.

Separate products round out the line. AssuranceAmerica Motor Club offers 24/7 roadside assistance as a membership. Renters insurance starts at $13 a month, according to the company. Commercial auto covers small businesses and tradespeople.

Discounts and programs

AssuranceAmerica's main savings program is MobileMax, which is not a driving tracker. Within 15 days of the policy start, you complete three check-ins in the AssuranceAmerica+ app: photos of your car's exterior, a photo of the odometer and a document showing your address. The company says MobileMax can cut your rate by up to 20%, depending on the state. It also offers an app download discount and says it does not use tracking. Its fast-quote pledge says the company aims to make the first quote you see match your final price as closely as possible. Because it does not run credit score checks, a thin or damaged credit history does not count against you when you quote; see credit-based insurance scores for how other insurers use credit.

Claims

Claims can be reported online 24 hours a day through AssuranceAmerica's claims portal, by phone at 888-580-8134 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern) or by email. Policyholders can pay bills, get ID cards and manage policies in the AssuranceAmerica+ app or the online customer portal.

Ratings and reputation

AssuranceAmerica does not publish an AM Best rating on its website, and it is not among the brands J.D. Power ranks in its auto insurance studies.

The most significant recent event is a data breach. On July 10, 2026, AssuranceAmerica Managing General Agency, LLC posted a notice that an unauthorized party had accessed its systems after targeting an employee on March 16, 2026, and had copied data files. The company detected the activity on March 17. Depending on the person, the exposed data included names, contact details, policy and claims information, driver and vehicle information and driver's license numbers. For a limited number of people, it also included Social Security or tax ID numbers. The company offered 12 months of credit monitoring to affected California and Pennsylvania residents (enrollment deadline October 10, 2026) and set up a helpline at 844-854-2353.

Who it suits

AssuranceAmerica is aimed at drivers who need coverage quickly and may have a spotty record, a lapse or limited credit, and who like having an agent. Its no-credit-check quoting and photo-based discount set it apart from many nonstandard rivals. Drivers who can qualify for standard coverage will usually find broader discounts elsewhere.

  • Strengths: No credit check; quotes in about 90 seconds; MobileMax discount of up to 20% without driving surveillance; SR-22 filings; large independent agent network in 13 states.
  • Weaknesses: 2026 data breach involving driver's license and, for some, Social Security numbers; no published AM Best rating; few discounts beyond MobileMax; not sold in most of the Northeast or West.
