Overview
Bear River Mutual Insurance Company is a Utah-only property and casualty insurer based in Murray, a Salt Lake City suburb. It ranked #82 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $211.2 million in auto premium and a 0.06% national share.
That national figure understates its local weight. All of Bear River's auto premium is written in Utah, where the NAIC's 2025 state data place it fifth among private passenger auto insurers with about 5.9% of the market, behind only Progressive, State Farm, Allstate and GEICO's parent Berkshire Hathaway.
Bear River is a mutual, meaning it has no stockholders and is owned by its policyholders. It sells exclusively through independent agents, so a quote comes from a local agency that may also represent other carriers. Its product line is short: auto, home and condo, renters, dwelling (rental property) and umbrella insurance. The company states plainly that it "does not issue policies outside of Utah."
History
Bear River Mutual was established on July 1, 1909, in Garland, a farming town in northern Utah along the Bear River, to give local farmers affordable insurance. It describes itself as Utah's oldest mutual property and casualty insurance company and uses the motto "Where Values Count."
The company has remained a single-state insurer for more than a century, growing from a rural farm mutual into a personal lines carrier that now writes auto, home, condo, renters, dwelling and umbrella policies for Utah households. Its mutual structure ties it to the tradition of policyholder-owned insurers in the U.S., which it traces back to Benjamin Franklin's 1752 fire insurance company. For background on how small mutuals compete with national brands, see why regional insurers can beat the giants.
Auto insurance coverage
Bear River's auto policy covers private passenger vehicles as well as motorhomes, trailers and campers. Coverages listed on its auto page:
- Bodily injury and property damage liability, including legal defense.
- Out-of-state coverage that adjusts your liability limits to meet another state's minimums when you drive there.
- Personal injury protection (PIP). Utah is a no-fault state, so PIP pays medical expenses, lost wages and funeral or survivor benefits after a crash regardless of fault. See how PIP works.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
- Comprehensive (theft, vandalism, natural disasters, animal strikes) and collision.
- 24-hour towing and roadside assistance (jump starts, tire changes, lockouts, towing).
- Rental car reimbursement, which also helps with travel expenses during repairs.
The company does not advertise newer optional coverages such as new car replacement, gap coverage, accident forgiveness or rideshare endorsements. Ask your agent whether any of these are available before assuming they are.
Discounts and programs
Bear River lists the following auto discounts: multiple policies, multiple cars, paid in full, prompt payments, non-owner students (students who do not have their own vehicle), senior driver training, older vehicles ("We don't think you should have to replace a trusted car just to get a discount") and motorhomes. Its FAQ adds a claim-free discount for policyholders who have not filed claims, and bundling home and auto.
Two named programs offer additional discounts for eligible drivers: the Best Driver Program and the Abstainer Program. The website does not spell out the qualifications for either, so ask an agent how they apply to your household.
There is no telematics or usage-based program on Bear River's site. Drivers who want to be priced on their own driving data will need to look at national carriers.
Claims
Claims can be reported 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling 801-267-5000 or online. Have your policy number, the insured's name and address, and the date of the loss ready. A claims specialist contacts you within one business day of the initial report. Policyholders can also use the online customer portal to view policy details and print proof-of-insurance cards.
Bear River's Bear Care Direct Repair Program is a direct repair network of more than 40 partner body shops across Utah. Using a Bear Care shop means no separate third-party appraisal: you take the car straight to the shop, additional damage found during repairs can be fixed without waiting for another insurer approval, and the work is guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle, with Bear River standing behind the guarantee. You remain free to choose any repair shop, but only Bear Care repairs carry that guarantee. See how direct repair programs work.
Ratings and reputation
Bear River's FAQ states that it holds an AM Best rating of A- (Excellent), as displayed in October 2026. That is in AM Best's second-highest category and indicates an excellent ability to meet policyholder obligations; see AM Best ratings explained.
Bear River is not among the regional leaders named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Utah drivers can check its complaint record through the NAIC's consumer insurance search or the Utah Insurance Department before buying.
Who it suits
Bear River fits Utah households that like the idea of a century-old local mutual, want to work with an independent agent, and plan to insure both home and cars with one company. Its discount list rewards long-term, low-claim customers and households with older vehicles or motorhomes. It is not an option for anyone living outside Utah, and digital tools are basic: policy changes such as adding a driver or vehicle go through your agent.
- Strengths: Utah's fifth-largest auto insurer by 2025 premium with deep local roots; policyholder-owned mutual rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best; Bear Care repair network with a lifetime workmanship guarantee; discounts for older vehicles, prompt payment and abstainers.
- Weaknesses: Sold only in Utah; no telematics program or mobile app advertised; no published new car replacement, gap or accident forgiveness options; program eligibility rules (Best Driver, Abstainer) are not explained online.
