Overview

GoAuto Insurance is a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, company that sells only one product: low-cost personal auto insurance. It ranked #61 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $337.2 million, or 0.09% of the national market.

The policies are issued by GoAuto Insurance Company, a stock company, and GoAuto Casualty, a reciprocal, both with home offices in Baton Rouge. Since 2022 the business has been owned by Drive Assurance Holdings, a specialty auto holding company set up by the private equity firm Milestone Partners. GoAuto's website lists eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas.

GoAuto sells direct. Its pitch is "no commissioned agents," "no expensive add-ons" and low down payments, and customers can buy online, by phone, in the mobile app or at company-run storefront offices. The site explicitly markets to higher-risk drivers, which puts it in the nonstandard auto insurance segment alongside carriers that focus on state-minimum and low-limit policies.

History

GoAuto was founded in 2009 by Greg Tramontin, a Louisiana insurance executive who became known locally as "the GoAuto Guy." It grew through walk-in storefront offices in Louisiana before expanding to Texas, Nevada and Ohio.

In May 2022 Milestone Partners, a Pennsylvania private equity firm, formed Drive Assurance Holdings and bought GoAuto LLC together with its technology affiliate, Adaptive Information Technologies. Insurance Journal described GoAuto at the time as a tech-focused, vertically integrated platform providing low-limit policies through managing general agent and insurance carrier subsidiaries. The Advocate reported that the company then ran about 70 storefronts in Louisiana, Texas, Nevada and Ohio, that the deal followed 15 months of due diligence, and that Milestone planned to add two or three more auto insurers under the GoAuto umbrella.

Expansion followed. Alabama was added, and GoAuto entered Georgia in July 2025 as its sixth state. Its website now also lists Florida and Tennessee. Louisiana remains the core market: Insurance Business, citing AM Best data, reported in July 2025 that nearly two-thirds of GoAuto's premium came from Louisiana, followed by Texas.

Auto insurance coverage

GoAuto's coverage menu is short by design. According to its FAQ, policies can include:

  • Liability for injuries and property damage you cause to others
  • Collision and comprehensive for your own car
  • Uninsured motorist property damage (a deductible applies)
  • Rental car coverage, sold as a separate option
  • SR-22 filings, depending on your situation
  • Non-owner policies for people who drive but do not own a car

Low-limit liability policies are the company's core product. Buying limits near the state minimum keeps the premium low but leaves your own car unprotected and can leave you personally exposed after a serious crash; the guide to minimum vs full coverage explains the trade-off. GoAuto's site does not advertise extras such as roadside assistance packages, gap coverage or new-car replacement.

Discounts and programs

GoAuto's own pages emphasize price structure rather than a published discount list: low down payments, custom payment plans with flexible due dates, and online renewals and policy changes. It has no telematics or usage-based program on its site.

Payment options are broad, which matters for customers without a bank account. GoAuto accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express, e-checks, Venmo, PayPal, money orders and paper checks, and offers autopay. Card and digital payments carry a 2.59% fee; checks, ACH bank transfers and money orders do not. The website is also available in Spanish.

Claims

You can report a claim in the GoAuto app, through the online claim form, by calling 833-700-0000 or in person at an office. GoAuto says an assigned adjuster contacts the parties within two business days of the report. The app also lets you review an existing claim, view ID cards, make payments and change vehicles or drivers.

Phone sales and support run 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Central Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; automated payments are available around the clock. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. GoAuto's locations page currently lists dozens of offices across Louisiana, Texas and Nevada.

Ratings and reputation

GoAuto's website does not cite an AM Best financial strength rating. Results have been improving: Insurance Business reported in July 2025, based on AM Best data, that GoAuto earned $911,000 of net income in the first quarter of 2025 after a $1.2 million loss a year earlier, while its net underwriting loss narrowed to $2.2 million from $3.7 million.

GoAuto does not appear in the regional rankings published with J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (June 2026). Before buying, it is worth checking your state insurance department's complaint data, as described in how to research an insurance company.

Who it suits

GoAuto suits drivers whose main goal is a legal, affordable policy with a small down payment, especially those who like to pay cash or handle things face to face in Louisiana, Texas or Nevada. It is also an option for drivers who need an SR-22 or a non-owner policy. Drivers who want broad coverage options, bundling with home insurance or an agent to compare several carriers will be better served elsewhere; see how nonstandard insurers work.

  • Strengths: Low down payments and flexible payment dates; in-person offices plus app, phone and online service; SR-22 and non-owner policies; Spanish-language website.
  • Weaknesses: Auto only, so no home or renters bundle; few optional coverages; no published AM Best rating or J.D. Power ranking; 2.59% fee on card and digital payments; sold in only eight states.
