Overview

Grinnell Mutual is best known in the insurance industry as a reinsurer: it is the largest primary reinsurer of farm and county mutual insurance companies in North America, backing local mutuals across the Midwest. Alongside that role, it sells its own auto, farm, business and umbrella policies to the public, mostly coverage the local mutuals do not write themselves. Its personal auto product is marketed as Grinnell Compass Auto Insurance.

The Grinnell Mutual group ranked #72 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $251.7 million in personal auto premium (about 0.07% of the U.S. market). Policies are sold only through independent agents; the company says it works with more than 1,700 local agencies and brokers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Many of those agents also sell home and farm policies for the local mutuals Grinnell reinsures, which is how a household ends up with a mutual homeowners policy and a Grinnell auto policy from the same office.

Auto policies are issued by three underwriting companies: Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, SI; Grinnell Select Insurance Company; and Grinnell Compass, Inc.

History

The company was organized on April 17, 1909, in Greenfield, Iowa, as the Iowa Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association, a reinsurance facility for Iowa's county mutuals. It moved to Grinnell in 1933 and became the Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association, then the Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company in 1948. The name Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company was adopted on June 26, 1963.

Grinnell Select Insurance Company was organized in 1984 as a facility for risks with special characteristics; Iowa regulators' 2025 examination describes it as writing commercial and private auto in 11 states, with all of its premium ceded to the parent. Grinnell Compass, Inc., whose name the auto brand carries, has ceded all of its business to the parent since October 2015.

The biggest structural change came on January 1, 2025, when the group reorganized into a mutual holding company. Grinnell Mutual Holding Company now sits at the top, with an intermediate stock holding company beneath it, and the operating company was renamed Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, SI and converted into a stock insurer. The other Grinnell companies stayed in place beneath it; the general difference between the structures is explained in mutual vs stock insurers.

Auto insurance coverage

Grinnell Compass policies cover cars, pickups and RVs with the standard coverages: liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and medical payments.

The optional Auto Plus endorsement bundles several extras:

  • Pet injury: up to $500 for vet bills or adopting a new pet if a pet is hurt or killed in an accident
  • Air bag reinstallation if an air bag deploys without an accident
  • Key and electronic entry replacement up to $250, and lockout reimbursement up to $100
  • Personal property stolen with the car, up to $500
  • Collision and comprehensive extended to rental cars, plus up to $750 for rental company loss-of-use charges
  • First-year total loss: a new vehicle declared a total loss within a year of purchase and under 15,000 miles is replaced with one a model year newer, a form of new car replacement

Grinnell also writes farm truck coverage, which can be added to a personal auto policy, with pollution liability for manure or chemical spills, owned and non-owned cargo, limited hauling for hire and large trucks including semis. A separate policy covers land-based recreational vehicles such as ATVs and snowmobiles.

Discounts and programs

Grinnell publishes one of the longer discount lists among regional carriers:

  • Paid in full for paying the personal auto or farm truck premium up front
  • Multi-line when your home is insured by one of Grinnell's mutual members (in Pennsylvania, homes insured by Grinnell itself also qualify)
  • Timely payor, applied automatically and removed after one late payment on a six-month policy or two on an annual policy
  • Advance quote for a complete quote at least seven days before coverage starts
  • Good student (B average, full-time, under 25) and distant student (more than 100 miles away without a car)
  • Homeowner, even if the home is insured elsewhere
  • Anti-theft, passive restraint, driver improvement and motorcycle safety course
  • Multi-unit, layup (seasonal storage of recreational vehicles), motor home limited use (under 5,000 miles a year) and riding association membership

Grinnell does not offer a telematics or usage-based program. It does run the Road to Success Scholarship, which awards eighty $1,000 scholarships each year to high school seniors in customer families who have good grades and a clean driving record.

Claims

Auto claims can be filed online through your account or by calling the claims call center at 877-649-0823. When you report directly, Grinnell asks a short series of questions to decide early whether the car is repairable or a likely total loss, so the claim goes to the right adjuster from the start. Policyholders who opt in can text their adjuster through Hi Marley; existing claims can also be checked at 877-649-0823 or by email.

Glass-only claims are handled by Safelite AutoGlass at 800-924-3854, with in-shop or mobile repair. One practical note from the company: claim checks over $2,500 cannot be cashed at a bank other than your own, so deposit them into your account.

Ratings and reputation

On September 30, 2025, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a+" long-term issuer credit rating of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, SI, Grinnell Select and Grinnell Compass, and revised the outlook to stable from negative, citing improved operating results in 2024 and 2025. Grinnell says it has held an A or higher rating since 1991.

Grinnell was not among the regional leaders named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (June 2026). Complaint records for each Grinnell company can be looked up on the NAIC's Consumer Information Source.

Who it suits

Grinnell makes most sense for Midwest households that already have a home or farm policy with a local mutual and want auto from the same independent agent, and for farm operations that need trucks, semis and recreational vehicles covered alongside family cars. The Auto Plus endorsement and long discount list add value. Drivers who want to buy online, want telematics savings or live outside the 12-state territory should look elsewhere.

  • Strengths: Auto Plus endorsement with first-year total loss replacement and rental loss-of-use coverage; farm truck coverage with pollution and cargo protection; a long discount list including timely payor and distant student; A (Excellent) rating held since 1991.
  • Weaknesses: Agent-only with no direct online purchase; no telematics program; multi-line savings depend on your home being insured with a Grinnell member mutual; outlook was negative until September 2025.
