Overview

Mile Auto is an Atlanta-based insurance technology company and managing general agent (MGA) that sells pay-per-mile car insurance. Instead of a plug-in device or a phone app that tracks driving, customers text in a photo of their odometer each month, and Mile Auto's computer-vision system reads it and bills for the miles driven. The company aims at drivers covering 10,000 miles a year or less, such as remote workers, retirees, college students and city dwellers.

Mile Auto is not itself an insurance company and does not appear in NAIC's private passenger auto rankings. As an MGA it designs, prices and services the policies, while an insurer takes the risk; trade press reports in July 2026 named Cimarron Insurance Company as Mile Auto's carrier partner. (Earlier consumer reviews named a different underwriter, so check the insurer listed on your declarations page.) See texas county mutuals and fronting carriers: who really insures you for how these arrangements work.

Mile Auto is still selling. As of October 2026 its website lists Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas, and drivers elsewhere can join a waitlist.

History

Mile Auto was founded in 2017 by Fred Blumer, who is CEO, with Jim Cook, Joe Fuller and Scott Nelson. Its first launch was in Oregon and Illinois, sold through independent agents, with Blumer arguing that low-mileage drivers were overpaying under traditional pricing and that where and how people drive should be their own business.

The company later added direct online sales and partner programs; its website has quote pages for Honda and Acura owners and for Hyundai and Genesis owners, and a SmartGO program that shares mileage data with transportation-demand groups. Trade press in 2026 also described Mile Auto as the exclusive provider of Porsche Auto Insurance, a program that promotes Porsche's certified collision repair network.

On July 1, 2026, Mile Auto acquired The Insurance House, Inc., an Atlanta MGA founded in 1964 that sells through independent agencies across the Southeast with Southern General Insurance Company as its carrier. Both brands continue to operate. The combined business reported nearly $100 million in annual premium, more than 55,000 policyholders and about 1,600 independent agencies across 10 states.

Auto insurance coverage

Mile Auto calls its product full-coverage insurance with a per-mile price. Every policy carries at least the state-minimum liability limits, with higher limits available. Collision and comprehensive are optional, as they usually are, though lenders require them on financed or leased cars. Optional extras include rental reimbursement and roadside assistance, and its quote form offers uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury and property damage coverage and medical payments coverage.

Mile Auto points out that the base rate works like storage insurance for a car that sits most of the time, but without having to change the policy before driving it.

Discounts and programs

Mile Auto's pricing has two parts: a monthly base rate and a per-mile rate. Its own example: a driver with a $48 base rate and an 8-cent per-mile rate who drives 300 miles in a month pays $72. Both rates depend on standard factors such as driving history, location, vehicle, age, years licensed, credit history (where allowed) and chosen coverages. The company says customers can save 30% to 40% compared with their previous insurer, though savings depend on mileage; its quote tool warns some drivers that it cannot predict a saving.

There is no driving-behavior tracking. The MVerity system sends a text and email reminder each month with a link that opens the phone camera; the photo is checked against the vehicle and earlier readings. Mile Auto does not publish a list of conventional discounts. For a comparison of mileage-based options, see pay-per-mile car insurance: how the pricing works and the pay-per-mile break-even calculator.

Claims

Claims are reported by calling 888-645-3001 and choosing option 3; the claims team is available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an online form on the claims page for reporting outside those hours. Roadside assistance has a separate number, 866-702-4639. Customer care, at the same main number, works weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by email at [email protected].

Ratings and reputation

Mile Auto has no financial strength rating of its own because it is an agency, not an insurer; its FAQ says its policies are underwritten by a national insurer rated "Excellent" by AM Best and backed by a large reinsurer, without naming it. Mile Auto is too small to appear in J.D. Power's auto insurance studies. Limited service hours (no weekend phone claims) are a practical drawback compared with large carriers.

Who it suits

Mile Auto suits drivers in its nine states who drive well under the national average, want privacy, and would rather snap one odometer photo a month than let a device or app track speed, braking or location. Higher-mileage drivers, people wanting a home bundle or weekend phone service, and anyone outside its states should look elsewhere. Compare it with Lemonade Car, the successor to Metromile, which uses phone telematics instead.

  • Strengths: Privacy-focused pay-per-mile pricing with no tracking device; simple monthly photo verification; full coverage options; growing through the 2026 Insurance House acquisition.
  • Weaknesses: Sold in only nine states; little advantage for drivers above about 10,000 miles a year; claims phone line closed evenings and weekends; carrier partner not named on its own website; no J.D. Power ranking.
