GEICO sells direct with an A++ rating and better 2026 J.D. Power scores; Allstate offers local agents, Milewise pay-per-mile and more add-ons.
Verdict
GEICO and Allstate are the third- and fourth-largest U.S. auto insurers, and they suit different shoppers. GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, wrote $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55%). It sells mainly direct, online, by phone and in its app. Allstate, publicly traded, wrote $37.67 billion (10.14%) through more than 27,400 exclusive agents, a direct channel and, for National General, independent agents. Both sell in all 50 states and D.C.
GEICO has the stronger ratings profile: A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed April 2026, against Allstate's A+ (Superior), affirmed September 2026. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study GEICO beat the regional average in seven of 11 regions, Allstate in four. Their 2025 claims scores were close and both below the 700 average: GEICO 697 (tied 13th of 20), Allstate 693 (15th). Allstate leads on choice of channel and add-ons. It offers Milewise pay-per-mile, Accident Forgiveness, Auto Replacement Protection, and bundling perks such as a deductible waiver when one event damages car and home.

Both companies' telematics programs can raise your rate in some states, so read the terms (see telematics programs from the major insurers compared).
