GEICO vs Liberty Mutual

GEICO has the A++ rating and stronger regional satisfaction; Liberty Mutual ranks higher for claims and sells through independent agents too.

Verdict

GEICO and Liberty Mutual both sell auto insurance direct, online, by phone and in an app, but Liberty Mutual also sells through its own agents and more than 20,000 independent agencies (the former Safeco channel, renamed in April 2026). GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, is the third-largest U.S. auto insurer, with $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55%). Liberty Mutual, owned by a Massachusetts mutual holding company, wrote $10.41 billion (2.80%).

GEICO has the stronger financial rating: A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed April 2026, against Liberty Mutual's A (Excellent), affirmed September 2025. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study GEICO beat the regional average in seven of 11 regions; Liberty Mutual did so only in Texas. Claims tell the opposite story. Liberty Mutual placed third of 20 in the J.D. Power 2025 claims study with 730, while GEICO scored 697, tied for 13th. Liberty Mutual also has the broader coverage menu, with Better Car Replacement, original parts and a lifetime repair guarantee. GEICO counters with mechanical breakdown insurance and large affinity discounts.

Liberty Mutual's U.S. retail business shrank in 2025 as customers shopped around. Price is personal, so get quotes from both.
