GEICO vs Nationwide
GEICO sells direct everywhere with an A++ rating; Nationwide uses independent agents, ranks higher for claims and offers SmartMiles pay-per-mile.
Verdict
GEICO and Nationwide differ in size, ownership and how they sell. GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, is the third-largest U.S. auto insurer, with $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55%). It sells direct online, by phone and in its app in all 50 states and D.C. Nationwide, a policyholder-owned mutual, wrote $4.07 billion (1.09%). It sells through independent agents, online and by phone, and its state pages don't include Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts or D.C.
GEICO has the stronger balance sheet rating: A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed April 2026, against Nationwide's A (Excellent), affirmed November 2025, when AM Best called Nationwide's operating performance marginal. Customer scores favor Nationwide on claims. It scored 729 (4th of 20) in the J.D. Power 2025 claims study, while GEICO scored 697 (tied 13th). In the 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study both did well in parts of the country. GEICO beat the regional average in seven of 11 regions and placed second in New York and the Northwest. Nationwide placed second in the North Central, Southeast and Texas regions, and its telematics program ranked highest among usage-based offerings.
