GEICO vs Progressive
Two big online sellers. GEICO has the A++ rating and better satisfaction scores; Progressive adds independent agents and nonstandard coverage.
Verdict
GEICO and Progressive are the country's third- and second-largest auto insurers, and both built their businesses on selling direct: online, by phone and in an app. GEICO, owned by Berkshire Hathaway since 1996, wrote $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55% of the market); Progressive, a publicly traded company, wrote $69.01 billion (18.57%). Both sell in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The biggest structural difference is that Progressive also sells through independent agents. GEICO stays mostly direct, though it has some local offices.
On the published scorecards GEICO leads. AM Best affirmed its A++ (Superior) rating in April 2026, against Progressive's A+ (Superior) affirmed in May 2026. GEICO beat the regional average in seven of 11 regions of the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Progressive beat it only in California. In J.D. Power's 2025 claims study GEICO scored 697 (tied for 13th of 20) and Progressive 673 (18th). Both sit below the 700 average. Progressive's strengths are elsewhere. It writes both standard and nonstandard drivers, offers Snapshot by app or plug-in device, and builds small-claim accident forgiveness into its policies.
Neither company is cheaper for everyone. Their pricing models differ enough that the same driver can get very different quotes, so get quotes from both.
Choose GEICO if
- You want the highest AM Best rating (A++, affirmed April 2026) and Berkshire Hathaway backing.
- You are military, a federal employee or a member of one of the 800-plus groups GEICO gives affinity discounts to. Deployed drivers can save up to 25%.
- You insure several cars (multi-vehicle discount up to 25%) or have a clean record (up to 22%).
- You have a new car and want mechanical breakdown insurance billed with your auto policy.
- You live in one of the seven J.D. Power regions where GEICO beat the 2026 average, such as New York or the Northwest.
Choose Progressive if
- You want to choose between buying direct and working with an independent agent who can also quote other carriers.
- You have tickets, a lapse or another mark on your record. Progressive writes nonstandard business.
- You want accident forgiveness built in: a claim under $500 won't raise your rate, and after five years most claims won't.
- You drive for a rideshare app or want extras like pet injury coverage and the Deductible Savings Bank.
- You want a usage-based program that works with a plug-in device as well as an app.

Both telematics programs can raise your rate if the app logs risky driving, so read the terms before enrolling (see telematics programs from the major insurers compared). Quote the same limits and deductibles with each company. If you try Progressive, compare its direct price with an agent's. Our car insurance quote comparison worksheet keeps the numbers side by side.
