GEICO vs State Farm
GEICO sells direct with an A++ rating; State Farm sells through 19,000+ agents, scores higher on J.D. Power and just paid a $5 billion dividend.
Verdict
State Farm and GEICO are the largest and third-largest U.S. auto insurers, and they sell in opposite ways. State Farm is a policyholder-owned mutual that wrote $69.16 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (18.61% of the market). It sells through more than 19,200 captive agent offices that offer only State Farm products. GEICO, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, wrote $42.91 billion (11.55%). It is a direct writer built around its website, app and phone lines.
Each has a ratings edge. GEICO holds AM Best's top A++ (Superior) rating, affirmed in April 2026. AM Best downgraded State Farm to A+ (Superior) in November 2025 after years of underwriting losses, though State Farm then reported a $4.6 billion auto underwriting gain for 2025. On customer satisfaction State Farm leads. It beat the regional average in nine of 11 regions in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, against seven for GEICO. In the 2025 claims study State Farm scored 716 (tied for 8th of 20) and GEICO 697 (tied for 13th). State Farm's mutual structure also lets it return money: a $5 billion auto dividend averaging about $100 per vehicle, paid from summer 2026.
The choice is mostly about how you want to be served. Price depends on the driver and the state, so get quotes from both.

A State Farm agent can quote only State Farm, so you need a separate GEICO quote to compare. Ask for the same liability limits, deductibles and optional coverages from each, and check which telematics discounts your state allows.
