Compare auto insurers side by side
Pick up to three of the 100 largest U.S. auto insurers to compare their size, financial strength, customer ratings, contacts and programs.
Runs entirely in your browser: nothing you enter is sent or stored by this site. Results are estimates for planning, not a quote or advice.
What it does
Price is only half of choosing an insurer; the other half is the company. This tool puts up to three insurers in one table: their rank and share of the U.S. auto market, financial strength rating, J.D. Power results and complaint record where available, where and how they sell, their usage-based program, and the phone numbers you would actually call. Filter by type — national carriers, regional insurers, Farm Bureau companies, nonstandard specialists — to compare like with like.
Where the figures come from
Each column is read from that insurer's profile on this site, which lists its sources and the date it was reviewed. Rank, premiums and market share come from NAIC market share data for 2025 private passenger auto insurance. Ratings change: the AM Best rating and complaint figures carry the date they were checked on the profile page.
How to use the comparison
- Financial strength tells you about the insurer's ability to pay claims; see AM Best financial strength ratings explained.
- Complaints relative to size are a useful signal of how a company treats claimants; see The NAIC complaint index: how to look up an insurer.
- Availability matters first: many regional insurers sell in only a few states.
- How it sells — through its own agents, independent agents or directly — shapes the service you will get. See captive agents vs independent agents vs buying direct.
What it cannot tell you
Your price. Two drivers can get very different quotes from the same company. Use this tool to choose which insurers to get quotes from, then compare the quotes themselves with the car insurance quote comparison worksheet.
