Defensive driving course

A state-approved driving safety class that can earn an insurance discount and, in some states, reduce points or dismiss a ticket.

Also called: driver improvement course, accident prevention course, mature driver course, traffic school

A defensive driving course teaches crash-avoidance techniques, traffic law and hazard awareness, online or in a classroom. States approve course providers, and finishing an approved course can bring insurance and licensing benefits.

The insurance benefit is a discount, which some states require for certain drivers. New York's Point and Insurance Reduction Program, for example, gives a 10% reduction on liability and collision premiums for three years and can also reduce up to four points for suspension purposes. California and Florida require insurers to give a discount to drivers 55 and older who complete an approved mature driver course, good for three years. Elsewhere, insurers offer course discounts voluntarily, sometimes only to older drivers or to young drivers.

Some states also let drivers take a course to dismiss a ticket or keep points off their motor vehicle report, which can prevent a surcharge for a minor violation. A course taken to clear a ticket may not earn the insurance discount; Florida, for example, excludes court-ordered courses from its mature driver discount. Before enrolling, confirm that the course is approved in your state and ask your insurer whether it qualifies. See defensive driving course discounts.
