Overview
Agency Insurance Company (AIC) is a Maryland auto insurer whose legal name is Agency Insurance Company of Maryland, Inc. It ranked #67 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $279.7 million, or 0.08% of the national market.
AIC writes only vehicle insurance: personal auto, commercial auto, and motorcycle and off-road vehicle coverage. It sells in four states, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, and only through professional insurance agents. The company says it is represented by more than 1,500 agency locations, which means you buy and usually service the policy through an independent agent who may also quote other carriers.
Its headquarters is at 7450 Coca Cola Drive in Hanover, Maryland, with a mailing address in Elkridge.
History
AIC says it has provided personal insurance to individuals and families since 1990 and describes itself as "one of the fastest growing insurance companies" in its four states over the past 35-plus years. Today it writes in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, and alongside private passenger auto it has built commercial vehicle and motorcycle programs.
Its commercial book covers a wide range of work vehicles, including step vans, dump trucks, box trucks, tow trucks, flatbeds, bucket trucks and trailers, with limits up to $1 million combined single limit, garagekeepers, on-hook and motor truck cargo coverage, and federal and MCS-90 filings for regulated carriers. On the recreational side it insures motorcycles, ATVs, scooters, mopeds, Segways, golf carts and snowmobiles.
AIC does not publish details of its ownership or executives on its website.
Auto insurance coverage
Coverages vary by state and program. AIC lists:
- Bodily injury and property damage liability
- Medical payments
- Personal injury protection, relevant in Maryland and in Pennsylvania, where state law builds personal injury protection or first-party medical benefits into auto policies; Pennsylvania drivers also choose between full and limited tort under its choice no-fault system
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
- Comprehensive and collision
- Towing and labor, and roadside assistance
- Rental reimbursement
- Additional equipment coverage
Policies come in six-month and annual terms. AIC highlights friendly, knowledgeable and bilingual customer service representatives.
Discounts and programs
AIC publishes a long discount list, again varying by state and program: multi-car, homeowner, multi-policy, paid-in-full, EFT and automatic card payment, paperless, driver improvement program, good student, five-year claim-free, three-year claim- and violation-free, automatic emergency braking, and advance quote. It also offers accident forgiveness, and commercial drivers can get a discount for holding a commercial driver's license.
Payment flexibility is a selling point. AIC advertises low down payments, monthly installments by EFT and several bill plans; see paying in full vs monthly for how installment fees compare with a paid-in-full discount. Customers can view policy and billing information and print certificates of insurance at MyAICPolicy.com. AIC does not advertise a telematics program.
Claims
AIC offers 24/7 toll-free claim reporting at 800-841-5241. You can also email [email protected] or fax 410-684-3271. The company promises "fast, fair and friendly" claims service from experienced claims professionals and encourages policyholders to call and speak with a claims representative after a loss. It does not advertise a photo-estimate app or a named repair-shop network.
Ratings and reputation
AIC's website states that the company is rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best for financial stability and performance. It does not appear in the Mid-Atlantic or Southeast regional rankings of J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (June 2026), which cover its four states.
Because AIC is sold through agents, your agent is also a useful source of information about its service record; state insurance departments in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia publish complaint data if you want to research the company further.
Who it suits
AIC suits drivers in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia who want to buy through a local independent agent, value low down payments and flexible billing, and may also need coverage for a motorcycle, ATV or work truck. Drivers who prefer to quote and buy online, want a usage-based discount, or need home insurance from the same company will look elsewhere.
- Strengths: A- (Excellent) AM Best rating; long list of discounts including accident forgiveness and automatic emergency braking; low down payments and six-month or annual terms; personal, commercial and recreational vehicles under one company; bilingual service.
- Weaknesses: Only four states; no online quoting or direct purchase; no telematics program or mobile app advertised; little public information about ownership or claims tools.
