Overview

Erie Insurance (styled ERIE) is a regional insurer based in Erie, Pennsylvania, that sells auto, home, business and life coverage in 12 states and Washington, D.C. It ranked #11 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $5.27 billion in auto premiums and a 1.42% national share. The company describes itself as a Fortune 500 group with more than 7,000 employees and more than 7 million active policies.

The lead insurer, Erie Insurance Exchange, is a reciprocal insurance exchange: policyholders are its members, and the exchange is run by a separate management company, Erie Indemnity Company, acting as attorney-in-fact. Erie Indemnity is publicly traded on Nasdaq (ERIE); the exchange itself is not. ERIE sells only through independent agents (more than 13,000, according to the company) and does not sell policies directly online. Its signature feature is ERIE Rate Lock, which holds an auto premium steady unless the policy itself changes.

History

Henry Orth (H.O.) Hirt and Oliver Grover (O.G.) Crawford left Pennsylvania Indemnity Exchange in 1924, raised $31,000 from more than 90 stockholders and opened Erie Insurance Exchange in Erie, Pennsylvania, on April 20, 1925. Hirt was secretary and general manager and Crawford vice president. Hirt's own 1920 Dodge was insured on the company's 11th policy at an annual premium of $34. The founders' tagline, "Above all in sERvIcE," with the letters of "erie" capitalized, is still in use. The company opened its second office, in Pittsburgh, in 1928.

ERIE has remained a regional company. Today the property/casualty group includes Erie Insurance Company, Erie Insurance Company of New York, Erie Insurance Property & Casualty Company and Flagship City Insurance Company alongside the exchange, plus Erie Family Life Insurance Company. Unlike most carriers of its size, ERIE has not built a portfolio of separately branded insurers; everything is sold under the ERIE name.

Auto insurance coverage

The standard ERIE policy offers liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical payments or personal injury protection where a state requires it, rental car and transportation expenses, emergency road service and rideshare coverage. Several extras are built into the base policy, according to ERIE:

  • Pet coverage pays vet costs if a pet is hurt in a crash (up to $500 per pet, $1,000 total).
  • Personal item coverage pays up to $350 for belongings damaged inside an insured car, with physical damage coverage.
  • Locksmith costs up to $75 are covered under comprehensive.
  • Glass repair is included with comprehensive with no deductible; Full Window Glass can be added to waive the deductible for replacement too (see full glass coverage).

The optional ERIE Auto Plus endorsement adds a diminishing deductible, a $10,000 death benefit, additional days of transportation expense coverage, a waived deductible in certain situations and higher limits on some coverages. ERIE also insures motorcycles, RVs, ATVs and snowmobiles.

Discounts and programs

ERIE Rate Lock is the company's best-known feature: premiums change only if you add or remove a vehicle or driver or change where the car is garaged, even after a claim. Rate Lock does not guarantee continued coverage, is limited to three years in Virginia and is not offered in every state; New York customers get a version called ERIE Rate Protect.

Other discounts and programs include:

  • Multi-policy discounts of 15% to 25% depending on the state, plus multi-car and life-policy discounts.
  • First Accident Forgiveness after three years as a customer (see accident forgiveness).
  • A diminishing deductible through Auto Plus: $100 off for each claim-free year, up to $500.
  • A reduced-usage discount for cars stored 90 days or more (not available in Kentucky).
  • Safety equipment and anti-theft savings, safe-driver pricing and payment-plan options.
  • teenSMART, a crash-reduction course for drivers ages 16 to 20, worth up to 20%.

ERIE's telematics app, YourTurn, works differently from most usage-based programs: it pays rewards every two weeks for safe driving, redeemable for gift cards, rather than lowering the premium.

Claims

Claims can be started with your local agent or reported directly at 800-367-3743, which routes callers to glass claims, roadside assistance, new claims and existing claims. ERIE says it provides 24/7 support for auto claims. Glass claims and roadside requests can also be filed online or in the ERIE app, and policyholders can track claim status, repair shop and rental details, payments and the adjuster's contact information in their online account.

The 2025 J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study ranked ERIE first among 20 insurers with a score of 743, against an industry average of 700.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed the Erie Insurance Group's property/casualty companies at A (Excellent) with a stable outlook in September 2026. That followed a September 2025 downgrade from A+ (Superior), after several years of elevated loss costs and catastrophe activity. AM Best said in 2026 that results had improved, that ERIE returned to underwriting profitability in the fourth quarter of 2025, and that its 12-month auto policies and Rate Lock feature had slowed the effect of rate increases compared with peers.

Customer satisfaction scores are among the best in the industry. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, ERIE ranked highest in the Mid-Atlantic (704), North Central (688, its sixth straight year) and Southeast (691) regions, and third in New York (652). See J.D. Power auto insurance studies explained for how these studies work.

Who it suits

ERIE suits drivers who live in its footprint and want an agent relationship, generous built-in extras and predictable renewal prices. Rate Lock is most valuable to stable households that do not plan to change cars or drivers often. Shoppers outside its 12 states and D.C., or who prefer to buy and manage a policy entirely online, will need to look elsewhere.

  • Strengths: Top-ranked claims satisfaction in J.D. Power's 2025 study and three regional first places in 2026; Rate Lock keeps premiums steady between policy changes; extras such as pet, personal item and locksmith coverage are included in the base policy.
  • Weaknesses: Sold in only 12 states and D.C.; no direct online purchase, so you must work through an agent; AM Best lowered its rating to A (Excellent) in 2025; YourTurn earns gift-card rewards rather than a premium discount.
