Overview
Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Company is a policyholder-owned mutual insurer based in Quincy, Massachusetts, just south of Boston. With its Maine subsidiary, Patrons Oxford Insurance Company, it makes up the Quincy Mutual Group, which ranked #95 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written, with $149.9 million and a 0.04% market share, according to NAIC market share data.
Quincy Mutual sells personal auto, homeowners, condo, renters, umbrella, boat and rental-property coverage, plus business policies, only through independent agents. Its own auto policies are offered in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island; Patrons Oxford writes auto insurance in Maine under the Patrons name. Massachusetts is its core market, where it competes with other locally based insurers such as Arbella, Safety Insurance and Plymouth Rock. Gerald F. Cox is president and chief executive.
History
Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Company was founded in 1851 and has kept the same name for more than 170 years, marking its 175th anniversary in 2026. It began as a fire insurer and broadened over time into a full line of personal and commercial property and casualty coverage.
On December 30, 1997, Quincy Mutual bought Patrons Oxford Insurance Company after Patrons Oxford converted from a mutual to a stock company. Patrons Oxford's roots go back to two Maine farm mutuals formed by Grange members: Oxford County Patrons of Husbandry Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1876 and Patrons Androscoggin Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1877. They began writing automobile coverage in the 1950s and 1960s and still market themselves with a Maine-for-Maine-people identity from Portland. AM Best's most recent group release also lists New England Mutual Insurance Company of Quincy as a member.
Quincy also runs an assumed reinsurance business, taking on risk from other insurers; AM Best says it rebalanced that book across property catastrophe, casualty and financial lines to improve results. More recently Quincy named Gerald F. Cox, a former chief financial officer of Hiscox USA who spent more than 20 years at The Hartford, president and chief executive, succeeding Thomas A. Harris after a 35-year career with the company, and announced a strategic partnership with Barnstable County Mutual on Cape Cod.
Auto insurance coverage
Quincy Mutual's auto policy includes bodily injury, property damage, uninsured motorist and personal injury protection coverage, with optional collision, comprehensive, substitute transportation and towing and labor. Endorsements include:
- Customized equipment coverage for added parts and equipment
- Auto loan/lease coverage for the gap between what you owe and what the car is worth
- Auto Enhancement Endorsement, which bundles roadside assistance, a disappearing deductible and pet coverage
- Merit Rating Points/Accident Forgiveness in Massachusetts, which addresses the surcharge points the state's Safe Driver Insurance Plan adds after an at-fault accident
In Maine, Patrons Oxford's auto policy includes liability, medical payments, uninsured motorists, collision, non-collision (glass, fire, theft, animal strikes), towing and rental reimbursement, with endorsements for trip insurance, loan/lease, custom equipment and electronic equipment.
Discounts and programs
Quincy publishes discounts separately for Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. In Massachusetts they include an account credit of up to 14% on auto (and up to 30% on home) when Quincy insures both, 5% for paying in full, a 5% early-issue discount when you buy at least three days before the policy starts, an annual mileage discount, multi-car (including a personal car plus a company car), up to 35% off comprehensive for anti-theft devices, good student (B or 3.0 average) and student away at school. Patrons Oxford in Maine offers a loss-free credit of up to 10%, a 10% multi-policy discount, a 5% employer or affiliated group credit, mature driver, corporate car and 5% paid-in-full credits. Quincy does not advertise a telematics program.
Claims
Quincy asks you to report a loss first to your agent. You can also call the 24-hour claims line at 800-490-0047 or report online (available every day except 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday). Glass-only claims go to 866-423-7197, and roadside assistance, available only with the Auto Enhancement Endorsement, is at 800-379-2333. For claim status, call 617-770-5391 or 800-899-1116, extension 5391, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Quincy lists appraisers for each of its states and drive-in appraisal locations in Massachusetts.
Ratings and reputation
On November 2, 2021, AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating and "aa-" issuer credit ratings of Quincy Mutual Group's members and revised their outlooks to stable from negative, citing improved underwriting results, a balance sheet it assessed as strongest and underwriting leverage well below the composite. The negative outlooks had been assigned in September 2019. Quincy says it has held an A+ rating for more than 50 consecutive years. Quincy Mutual is not among the 13 insurers ranked for New England in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study; the Massachusetts-based insurers that were ranked, Safety (616), Arbella (602) and Plymouth Rock (592), all scored below the 631 regional average.
Who it suits
Quincy Mutual suits drivers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine who want an A+ rated local mutual, value an independent agent, and can bundle home and auto for a sizeable account credit. Massachusetts drivers worried about Safe Driver Insurance Plan surcharges can add its accident forgiveness endorsement. Drivers outside those four states cannot buy it, and anyone who wants online purchasing or a usage-based discount will need another carrier.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best rating; 175-year-old mutual; generous Massachusetts account and early-issue discounts; Auto Enhancement bundle with roadside, disappearing deductible and pet coverage.
- Weaknesses: Auto sold in only four states; roadside help only with an extra endorsement; no telematics or online buying; the most recent public AM Best release dates from 2021.
