Overview
Amica Mutual Insurance Company is the oldest mutual automobile insurer in the United States. As a mutual insurance company, it is owned by its policyholders rather than by stockholders, and it is headquartered in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Amica ranked #21 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, writing $1.64 billion in auto premiums for a 0.44% national share.
Amica is a direct writer. It does not use independent or captive agents; customers buy and service policies by phone, online, by chat or at Amica's own branch offices. Besides auto, it sells homeowners, condo, renters, umbrella, marine and life insurance, and it is authorized to do business in all states. The company says it has more than 3,500 employees and $5.9 billion in assets, and that it has received more than 65 J.D. Power awards. In some states, Amica auto policies can be bought as dividend policies, which may return part of the premium at each renewal.
History
Amica was founded in Providence in 1907 by A.T. Vigneron as the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America, offering automobile, fire and theft insurance. In 1914 a companion company, the Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America, was chartered to provide liability insurance to Automobile Mutual policyholders. Amica opened its first branch office, in Boston, in 1941 and began writing homeowners insurance in 1956, later adding marine and umbrella coverage.
Amica Life Insurance Company was incorporated in 1969. In 1973 Automobile Mutual and Factory Mutual merged into a single company, and in 1994 the corporate offices moved from Providence to Lincoln. The company marked its 100th anniversary in 2007. Edmund Shallcross III was elected president and chief executive officer in 2022.
Today the group includes Amica Life Insurance Company (life insurance and annuities, licensed in all states), Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company (a wholly owned subsidiary that writes auto insurance in select states) and Amica General Agency, LLC, formed in 1987 to place special or unusual risks.
Auto insurance coverage
Amica's standard auto policy offers liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (including property damage in some states), personal injury protection where required, and medical payments coverage.
Optional protection includes roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, glass coverage, and gap insurance that pays the difference between a totaled car's value and what you still owe on it. Amica also offers coverage for drivers who use their personal cars for rideshare or delivery apps, which a standard personal policy may exclude.
The dividend policy is the distinctive feature. Amica says dividend payments average 5% to 20% of the annual premium, but dividends are not guaranteed, are not offered in every state, and are paid only to policyholders whose policies are in force when a dividend is declared. AM Best noted in March 2026 that Amica has gradually reduced policyholder dividends.
Discounts and programs
Amica advertises savings of up to 30% for bundling auto with home, umbrella and life policies, and up to 25% for insuring two or more cars. A homeowner discount can apply even if the home is insured elsewhere. Loyalty savings start after two years with the company, and a legacy discount is available to drivers under 30 whose parents have had an Amica auto policy for at least five consecutive years.
Young-driver discounts cover good students aged 15 to 25 with a B average, drivers under 21 who complete accredited driver training, and students away at school without a car. Other discounts reward three claim-free years, defensive driving courses, anti-theft devices, electronic stability control, passive restraints, forward-collision warning, adaptive headlights, paying in full, AutoPay and paperless billing.
Amica's usage-based program is StreetSmart by Amica, a free smartphone app that runs in the background and scores hard braking, speeding, road type, phone distraction, phone use and screen tapping. New policyholders can get up to 10% off just for registering, and the discount at renewal, up to 20%, is set by a 91-day driving score. The app also awards gift cards and charity donations. Read how these programs compare in telematics programs from the major insurers compared.
Claims
Customers can report a claim online after logging in, in the Amica app, through live chat (weekdays 8 a.m. to midnight and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern) or by phone at 800-242-6422. People who are not Amica customers can also report a claim online.
Amica's Repair Assistance Program includes more than 2,900 certified repair shops that warranty claims-related repairs for as long as you own the car, though you may choose any shop. Glass claims run through a glass program with a lifetime guarantee on replacements. Roadside assistance (towing, tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery and lockouts) is available 24/7 at 866-286-9968; it is included with towing and labor coverage, and other policyholders can use it at their own expense.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best affirmed Amica's financial strength rating of A+ (Superior) in March 2026 and revised its outlook to stable from negative. The negative outlook, assigned in February 2024, followed several volatile years of inflation and catastrophe losses. AM Best credited a return to operating profitability driven by significant rate increases and a strategic focus on core northeastern states.
Customer satisfaction is Amica's strongest credential. It ranked first among 13 insurers in New England in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study with a score of 702, against a regional average of 631, its third straight year at the top of that region. In the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Amica scored 718, seventh of 20 ranked insurers and above the study average of 700; Erie, NJM and Liberty Mutual led that study. See J.D. Power auto insurance studies explained for how these surveys work.
Who it suits
Amica suits drivers who want strong service and are comfortable handling insurance by phone, app or chat rather than through a local agent. It is especially relevant in New England, where it is the region's best-rated insurer for satisfaction and where AM Best says the company is concentrating. Households that can bundle home and auto get the largest discounts, and the dividend option can lower the net cost in states where it is offered. Price-focused shoppers should compare quotes, since the company's recent recovery came largely from rate increases.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best rating with a stable outlook (March 2026); first in New England in the J.D. Power 2026 auto study; dividend policies that can return part of the premium; long discount list including StreetSmart.
- Weaknesses: No independent or captive agents; significant rate increases in 2024 and 2025; dividends are not guaranteed and have been reduced; seventh of 20 in the 2025 J.D. Power claims study, behind several large rivals.
