Overview
Texas Farm Bureau Insurance is the insurance arm of Texas Farm Bureau, the state's largest general farm organization, and it sells auto, home, farm and ranch, commercial and life coverage only in Texas. The companies are headquartered in Waco and describe themselves as "built by Texans for Texans."
The group ranked #32 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.10 billion in premiums and a 0.30% national share. Because all of that premium comes from one state, it is a much more significant player inside Texas than the national ranking suggests.
Policies are sold by more than 850 multi-line agents working from about 300 county offices, backed by more than 300 claims staff. The company says it serves more than 500,000 policyholders and their families. These are Texas Farm Bureau Insurance agents based in county offices, which makes them closer to captive agents than to independent brokers who shop several companies.
History
Texas Farm Bureau, the parent organization, grew from a small group founded in 1933 into the state's largest organization of farmers, ranchers and rural families, with more than 480,000 member families today. It is a voluntary, nongovernmental group financed by member dues and is part of the national Farm Bureau federation.
The insurance companies have been protecting Texas families since 1952 and describe their job as building a financially strong, member-oriented operation that supports the Farm Bureau's objectives and membership growth. The group today includes Texas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, Texas Farm Bureau Underwriters, Texas Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company and Farm Bureau County Mutual Insurance Company of Texas, a county mutual insurance company that gives the group the rating flexibility Texas allows county mutuals. Life insurance is offered through an affiliate, Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. The Farm Bureau guide explains how these state-by-state organizations fit together.
Auto insurance coverage
Texas Farm Bureau auto policies are built around the coverages Texas drivers most often carry. The company labels some as "need to have" and others as "nice to have":
- Liability coverage for injuries and property damage you cause to others.
- Personal injury protection, which Texas insurers must offer, for medical and non-medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for injuries and damage caused by drivers with little or no insurance.
- Medical payments coverage for accident-related medical bills.
- Death indemnity, a benefit paid for loss of life of you or a family member.
- Collision and comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle, including theft, fire and weather damage such as hail.
- Rental coverage for a rental car after a covered loss.
- Roadside assistance for breakdowns not caused by a collision.
Texas' own minimum limits and fault rules are covered on the Texas state page.
Discounts and programs
Texas Farm Bureau lists these auto discounts: multi-policy, multi-vehicle, claims free, driver's training, good student and vehicle safety. Its usage-based program is Drive'n Save, a smartphone app. Drivers get an initial discount for enrolling, and additional discounts depend on a driving score built from low mileage, time of day, speed, sudden braking and distracted driving (phone use). The usage-based insurance guide explains the trade-offs of letting an app score your driving.
Bundling is a large part of the value proposition: the same agent can write auto, homeowners, farm and ranch, commercial and life policies, which can qualify for the multi-policy discount.
Claims
Claims can be reported 24 hours a day at 800-266-5458, through your local agent, or online with your policy number and date of loss. The Waco claims office can be reached at 800-224-7936, and roadside assistance has a separate number, 833-832-7623. A fraud hotline is available at 800-711-0394.
Once a claim is reported it is assigned to an adjuster who reviews coverage, contacts you about what happened, inspects the vehicle and prepares an estimate. Payment is made for covered damage less your deductible. The company's claims FAQ also covers windshield repair versus replacement, lienholders on claim checks, supplemental payments when a shop finds more damage, and how disaster claims are handled.
Ratings and reputation
On its website, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance says it is consistently rated "Excellent" by AM Best; the specific letter grade and affirmation date for each company should be confirmed with AM Best before relying on it (see how AM Best ratings work). Because all of its business is in Texas, a severe hail, flood or hurricane season falls entirely on its own book rather than being spread across many states.
Customers who have a dispute can contact the company's customer service line or file a complaint with the Texas Department of Insurance, which handles complaints against all insurers licensed in the state.
Who it suits
Texas Farm Bureau Insurance suits Texans who value a local agent in their county and want to keep auto, home, farm and life coverage with one Texas company. Drivers who move out of state will need another carrier, and shoppers who want an independent agent to compare several companies at once will not find that here; compare quotes from national carriers such as State Farm or Texas-based Germania to check price.
- Strengths: Large statewide network of about 850 agents and 300 offices; more than 300 claims personnel serving one state; Drive'n Save telematics discount; death indemnity and roadside coverages; strong bundling options including farm and ranch.
- Weaknesses: Sold only in Texas, so coverage does not move with you; no independent-agent option for comparing several insurers at once; exact AM Best grade is not published on the company's site; all of its risk is concentrated in one state's weather.
