Overview

Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company is a property and casualty insurer headquartered in Ridgeland, Mississippi, that writes Farm Bureau insurance in six states: Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. Drivers rarely see its corporate name. They buy "Farm Bureau Insurance" from their state Farm Bureau office, such as Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance or Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance, and Southern Farm Bureau Casualty or an affiliated company underwrites the policy.

The group ranked #26 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.46 billion in auto premiums and a 0.39% national share. It markets through six state offices and Farm Bureau agents, who are independent contractors representing the Farm Bureau companies, and sells auto, home, farm, business and other property coverage. Membership rules come from the state Farm Bureau federations: Florida's Farm Bureau insurer states that county Farm Bureau membership is required for coverage, so buyers in the other states should ask their local office about membership dues. See Farm Bureau insurance: membership, eligibility and how it works for how this works.

Southern Farm Bureau Casualty is not the same company as Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company, which sells life insurance and annuities through the same agents. Nor does it cover every southern state: Farm Bureau insurers in Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and other states are separate companies, such as Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance and Alabama's Alfa.

History

Southern Farm Bureau Casualty was established in 1947 by Farm Bureau leaders to provide affordable insurance to rural farming communities. As its product lines expanded, its customer base broadened beyond farmers. Its training facility, Farm Bureau Tech, trains the company's claims adjusters and underwriters.

The group has grown by taking in state Farm Bureau insurers. The Florida Farm Bureau Group, made up of Florida Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company and Florida Farm Bureau General Insurance Company of Gainesville, is a wholly owned subsidiary. Most recently, Louisiana Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company completed a sponsored demutualization effective April 1, 2026: it converted to a stock company, Southern Farm Bureau Casualty bought all of its stock, and the renamed Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance Company now cedes 100% of its premiums, losses and expenses to Southern Farm Bureau Casualty under a reinsurance agreement. In Mississippi, Southern Farm Bureau Casualty and the affiliated Mississippi Farm Bureau Casualty say they are together the state's second-largest insurer of homes and automobiles.

Auto insurance coverage

Auto insurance is available in all six states. Policies are sold and explained by local agents, and coverage details vary by state. Mississippi's personal auto policy, for example, offers liability, medical expense coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, collision (which also pays for a rental car while your car is repaired after a covered loss), other than collision (comprehensive) coverage and emergency road service for towing or labor.

Florida's personal auto policy includes two enhancements at no extra charge: pet injury coverage of up to $500 for a dog or cat hurt in a covered accident, on policies with collision coverage, and towing and labor coverage of up to $125 when a car with physical damage coverage breaks down. The Farm Bureau MobileAgent app can be used to request emergency roadside assistance.

Discounts and programs

Discounts are set state by state. Florida Farm Bureau, for example, lists an account discount for multiple policies, multi-car, no moving violations, loyal customer, paperless billing and policy, and claims-free discounts, plus good student and driver training discounts for young drivers.

The group's signature program is DriveDown, a deductible rewards program run through the MobileAgent app. Unlike most usage-based programs, DriveDown does not change your premium. Instead, safe driving lowers your deductible, working like a disappearing deductible. Drivers earn a 5% deductible reward after enrolling and taking a first trip, can earn more every 30 days based on speed, sudden braking, time of day and distracted driving, and keep their earned percentage after a claim. The reward applies only when the enrolled person was driving and does not apply to glass-only claims. Drivers must be 18 or older, and the program's terms refer to Farm Bureau policies in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina.

Claims

Claims can be reported through the MobileAgent app, which offers 24/7 account access, on each state Farm Bureau's website or by phone at 866-275-7322. The company emphasizes local claims handling; in Mississippi, it says it has adjusters in every county. Your local Farm Bureau agent can also help start a claim.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best rates Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company A (Excellent) and issued a rating notification on the company in August 2026. Ratings differ within the group. When Louisiana Farm Bureau joined in April 2026, AM Best upgraded that company to A (Excellent) from B++ (Good). The Florida Farm Bureau companies remain rated B++ (Good) separately; in April 2026 AM Best revised their outlook to positive, citing an underwriting gain in 2024 and an underwriting profit of nearly $60 million in 2025 after years of volatile results, and noted support from their parent. The Farm Bureau brands do well with customers in Florida. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Florida Farm Bureau Insurance (Southern Farm Bureau) ranked first of 14 insurers in Florida with a score of 693, well above the 639 regional average. Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance (Southern Farm Bureau) scored 636 in the Central region, just under the 640 average.

Who it suits

Southern Farm Bureau's companies suit rural and small-town households in its six states who want a local agent, county-level claims service and the option of insuring farm property, home and auto together. Florida drivers in particular get a carrier that topped J.D. Power's 2026 Florida ranking. Drivers who do not want to pay Farm Bureau membership dues, or who live outside these six states, will need another insurer.

  • Strengths: First in Florida in J.D. Power's 2026 auto study; A (Excellent) AM Best rating at the parent; DriveDown lowers deductibles without risking a premium increase; local agents and adjusters.
  • Weaknesses: Available only in six states and, in Florida, only to Farm Bureau members; Florida subsidiaries are rated B++ (Good), a notch below the parent; Arkansas brand scored slightly below its regional average; coverage and discounts vary by state and are not published in one place.
