Overview

Universal Insurance Company is the main property and casualty insurer of Universal Group, Inc., a Puerto Rico insurance and financial services group based in Guaynabo. It ranked #66 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $297.1 million, or 0.08% of the national market. All of that business is in Puerto Rico, where Universal describes itself as "the largest automobile insurer."

Universal is not related to the Florida homeowners insurer Universal Insurance Holdings, despite the similar name. Besides auto, the Puerto Rico group sells homeowners (dwelling) and flood coverage, a personal package policy, commercial property and liability, bonds, life and disability insurance, and premium financing. Customers can get quotes online, buy through agents and brokers, and visit company service centers in Bayamón, Caguas, Canóvanas, Guaynabo, Hatillo, Mayagüez, Ponce and other towns.

History

According to AM Best, Universal Insurance Company was incorporated on May 15, 1971 and began business on March 1, 1972; AM Best has rated it since 1977.

The modern company was shaped by Luis Miranda Casañas, an Arecibo-born insurance broker who started in the business at 19, founded the brokerage Álvarez & Miranda in 1961 and opened a general agency, Eastern America Insurance Agency, in 1983. According to the foundation that bears his name:

• 1992: Miranda Casañas and his group acquired Universal Insurance Company.
• 1994: They organized Universal Life Insurance.
• 1998: He founded Universal Group as the holding company.
• 2001: Universal bought Caribbean Alliance Insurance Company (CAICO).
• 2004: The group expanded to the U.S. mainland.
• 2006: It created an investment division, Universal Investment.

Miranda Casañas died on January 7, 2019, at 81. The group's philanthropic arm, the Fundación Luis Miranda Casañas, was founded in 2012 by him and his daughter, Monique Miranda Merle.

Auto insurance coverage

Universal offers three main personal auto policies:

• Annual Auto Policy: a one-year policy with physical damage and liability coverage, what many people call "full cover." It includes collision, comprehensive (theft, fire, vandalism, flood, earthquake, windstorm and falling objects), bodily injury and property damage liability with legal defense, medical payments for you and your passengers, and rental reimbursement and transportation expenses while your car is in the shop.
• Double Interest: a physical damage-only policy (collision and comprehensive) usually bought for financed vehicles, protecting both you and the lienholder. • Auto Liability: an annual liability policy with broader coverage and higher limits than Puerto Rico's compulsory minimum, including bodily injury, property damage, medical payments and legal defense. Double Interest customers can add it to get liability protection.

Universal also helps with Puerto Rico's compulsory liability insurance (seguro de responsabilidad obligatorio, or SRO): its website lets customers download a certified copy of the compulsory policy and book appointments for compulsory-insurance matters.

Discounts and programs

The main published savings come from Unipak Personal, a package policy that combines protection for your home, car and home business and earns premium discounts. Travel & Road Assistance (sold as UniAsiste) can be added to auto policies for $45, covering towing, fuel delivery, battery jump-starts, tire changes and locksmith service, plus travel help such as lost-luggage assistance and medical assistance outside Puerto Rico. Universal Finance offers premium financing for Universal policies and other insurers' policies.

Universal does not publish other auto discounts online and has no telematics or usage-based program.

Claims

Claims can be started online through the "Report a Claim" link on universalpr.com or handled in person at Universal's customer service centers, which the company says it built around the island to service claims where customers need them. Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed Universal Insurance Company's financial strength rating of A- (Excellent) and issuer credit rating of "a-" on September 26, 2025, with a positive outlook for both. AM Best places it in Financial Size Category IX, meaning $250 million to $500 million of adjusted capital and surplus.

Who it suits

Universal suits Puerto Rico drivers who want a large, established local insurer with walk-in service centers, and especially buyers financing a car who need a double-interest policy matched to their loan term. Drivers who want detailed discount information online, telematics savings or a company that also covers them if they move to the mainland will need to look elsewhere.
