Overview

Cooperativa de Seguros Múltiples de Puerto Rico, which markets itself as Seguros Múltiples, is an insurance cooperative that sells auto, home and business insurance in Puerto Rico. It ranked #68 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $277.8 million, or 0.07% of the national market.

Unlike a stock insurer, Seguros Múltiples is owned by about 150 Puerto Rico cooperatives, mostly credit unions (cooperativas de ahorro y crédito), each with one vote in the assembly of delegates. It describes itself as a 100% Puerto Rican, nonprofit cooperative that puts value for policyholders and community investment ahead of returns to outside shareholders; the guide to mutual vs stock insurers explains how policyholder- and member-owned models differ. The company says it insures more than 700,000 people.

Customers can buy at eight branches around the island, through authorized representatives, online or in the mobile app. The company also urges car buyers to ask for a Seguros Múltiples policy at the dealership rather than letting someone else choose the insurer. Its website is in Spanish.

History

Seguros Múltiples was incorporated under Puerto Rico law on April 23, 1963 and began operating on February 8, 1965. It is organized under Chapter 34 of the Puerto Rico Insurance Code. Members meeting in assembly elect a board of directors, which in turn delegates day-to-day management to the company's officers. Yamil J. García Díaz signs the company's message to policyholders as president.

The cooperative grew into one of Puerto Rico's main multiple-line insurers while running long-standing community programs, including a poetry contest, an oratory contest, the ArteCoop program and scholarships. It also owns what it calls the country's most complete collection of contemporary Puerto Rican art, open to the public at its central office. Historian Guillermo Baralt wrote a book on the company's history, which it offers free in digital form.

Auto insurance coverage

Seguros Múltiples offers three main auto policies:

  • Full Cover: liability plus physical damage to your own car, including collision, theft and vandalism, with medical expenses available. The company recommends it for new or high-value cars.
  • Doble Interés (double interest): collision and comprehensive coverage for your car, commonly bought when the car is financed because it protects both you and the lender. It excludes liability. See insuring a financed car.
  • Responsabilidad Pública (public liability): liability for injuries and damage you cause to others, with medical expenses available. The company says it credits the cost of the compulsory insurance when you buy this policy.

Puerto Rico requires every vehicle to carry compulsory liability insurance (seguro obligatorio). According to Seguros Múltiples, it covers only damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property, up to $4,500; it does not cover your own car or anyone's injuries. Seguros Múltiples sells the compulsory coverage too, noting that the price is the same by law and the difference is in service, and its customer service handles compulsory-insurance refund requests. Because the compulsory limit is low, the guide to minimum vs full coverage is a useful read before relying on it alone.

Discounts and programs

The main published way to save is Multipack Personal, which combines auto, home and other property under a single policy with one payment and one renewal date, a version of a multi-policy discount. The company does not publish other auto discount amounts online and has no telematics program.

Optional services include Múltiple Asistencia en Carretera y Viaje, $50 a year for 24/7 roadside assistance across Puerto Rico (towing, tire changes, battery jump-starts, fuel delivery and locksmith service) plus travel assistance abroad such as medical help, luggage problems and cancellations, and a separate home assistance plan, also $50 a year.

Claims

Seguros Múltiples' auto claim process has three steps: fill out the claim form, choose a participating repair shop (taller participante) and take your car there, then authorize the repair. Participating shops offer a free estimate, priority handling and a repair guarantee, and can process the claim from start to finish. Claims can be started 24/7 online, in the app (including photos of the damage), by phone at 787-758-0101 or at a branch, and you can check claim status and upload documents online.

Branches are in Aguadilla, Hatillo (Arecibo area), Bayamón, Caguas, Carolina, Mayagüez, San Juan (Metropolitana) and Ponce.

Ratings and reputation

Seguros Múltiples states on its website that AM Best rates it A (Excellent) with a positive outlook and that Demotech gives it a Financial Stability Rating of A (Exceptional). The company also cites outside studies showing more than 90% customer satisfaction and recognition as one of Puerto Rico's best employers.

J.D. Power's U.S. Auto Insurance Study does not cover Puerto Rico, so there is no J.D. Power ranking. Complaints about Puerto Rico insurers go to the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance of Puerto Rico; see how to file a complaint.

Who it suits

Seguros Múltiples suits Puerto Rico drivers who want a locally owned insurer with strong financial ratings, branches and participating repair shops across the island. It is a natural fit for credit union members who like the cooperative model. Drivers who want detailed discount information online, telematics savings or coverage that follows them to the mainland will need another carrier.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) AM Best and A (Exceptional) Demotech ratings, per the company; cooperative ownership by local credit unions; participating-shop claims process with repair guarantee; low-cost roadside and travel assistance; Multipack bundling.
  • Weaknesses: Puerto Rico only; few discounts published online; no telematics program; website primarily in Spanish.
