Amica vs GEICO

Both sell direct. Amica, a small mutual, scores higher for service and may pay dividends; GEICO is far bigger, A++ rated and strong on discounts.

Verdict

GEICO and Amica are both direct writers. Neither uses independent agents; you buy by phone, online or in an app. The similarities stop there. GEICO, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, is the third-largest U.S. auto insurer, with $42.91 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (11.55%). Amica, the oldest mutual auto insurer in the country and owned by its policyholders, wrote $1.64 billion (0.44%). It is based in Rhode Island and concentrates on the Northeast.

Both are rated Superior by AM Best: GEICO A++, affirmed April 2026, and Amica A+, affirmed March 2026 with its outlook revised to stable from negative. Amica scores better on service. It placed 7th of 20 in the J.D. Power 2025 claims study with 718, against GEICO's 697 (tied 13th). It ranked first in New England in the 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study for the third straight year. GEICO beat the regional average in seven of 11 regions. In some states Amica sells dividend policies, which it says have averaged 5% to 20% of premium. Dividends aren't guaranteed, and AM Best notes they have been reduced.

Amica's recent recovery came largely from rate increases, while GEICO markets on low overhead. Prices vary by driver and state, so get quotes from both.
