Amica vs State Farm
Two A+ mutuals: Amica sells direct and leads New England satisfaction; State Farm sells through 19,000+ local agents almost everywhere else.
Verdict
State Farm and Amica are both policyholder-owned mutuals rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best. State Farm was downgraded to that level from A++ in November 2025. Amica's rating was affirmed in March 2026, with its outlook raised to stable from negative. Both return money to customers: State Farm through a $5 billion auto dividend in 2026, Amica through dividend policies in some states. They are very different in scale and in how they sell. State Farm wrote $69.16 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (18.61%) through more than 19,200 captive agent offices. Amica wrote $1.64 billion (0.44%) direct, by phone, online, chat and its own branch offices, with no agents.
Geography shapes this choice. State Farm doesn't quote new auto business in Massachusetts or Rhode Island, Amica's home state. Amica ranked first in New England in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (702, against a 631 average), and AM Best says the company is concentrating on its core northeastern states. Elsewhere State Farm's regional scores are strong: above average in nine of 11 regions and first in the Northwest. Their 2025 claims scores were close, with State Farm at 716 (tied 8th of 20) and Amica at 718 (7th).
Outside New England, the deciding factor is usually whether you want a local agent. Where both sell, get quotes from both.
