Erie Insurance vs State Farm
In ERIE's 12 states and D.C., it tops J.D. Power for claims and offers Rate Lock; State Farm sells nationally with captive agents and an A+ rating.
Verdict
State Farm and Erie Insurance both rely on local agents and both are owned by their policyholders, but ERIE is a regional company. State Farm, a mutual and the largest U.S. auto insurer, wrote $69.16 billion of private passenger auto premium in 2025 (18.61%) through more than 19,200 captive agent offices nationwide. ERIE, a reciprocal insurance exchange managed by Erie Indemnity Company, wrote $5.27 billion (1.42%). It sells only through more than 13,000 independent agents in 12 states and D.C.: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Inside that footprint, ERIE has the best service record of the two. It ranked first in the J.D. Power 2025 claims study with 743, against State Farm's 716 (tied 8th of 20). In the 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study ERIE ranked highest in the Mid-Atlantic, North Central and Southeast regions. State Farm was above average in nine of 11 regions and fourth in the Mid-Atlantic. State Farm holds the higher AM Best rating, A+ (Superior), after a downgrade from A++ in November 2025. ERIE is rated A (Excellent), affirmed September 2026 after a 2025 downgrade.
ERIE's Rate Lock, which holds your premium steady unless you change cars, drivers or garaging address, is unusual. State Farm answers with a $5 billion auto dividend in 2026 and average 10% rate cuts in 40 states. If you live in an ERIE state, get quotes from both.
Choose ERIE if
- You live in one of its 12 states or D.C. and want the top-ranked claims experience in J.D. Power's 2025 study.
- You want predictable renewals through ERIE Rate Lock (Rate Protect in New York; limited to three years in Virginia).
- You want extras built into the base policy, such as pet injury, personal item and locksmith coverage.
- You want an independent agent who can also show you other carriers.
- You want first accident forgiveness after three years as a customer.
Choose State Farm if
- You live outside ERIE's footprint.
- You want the higher AM Best rating (A+ vs. A).
- You want a usage-based discount on your premium. ERIE's YourTurn app pays gift-card rewards instead.
- You want to buy or manage a policy online. ERIE doesn't sell direct.
- You have a driver under 25 who could earn State Farm's Steer Clear discount.
