Overview

Alfa Insurance is the insurance arm of the Alabama Farmers Federation, Alabama's largest farm organization. Its lead company, Alfa Mutual Insurance Company, is a mutual insurance company headquartered in Montgomery. The Alfa group ranked #28 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.42 billion in auto premiums and a 0.38% national share.

Alfa's core markets are Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, where it sells auto, home, farm, life, business and health products through local agents working from 477 service centers. The company says it has more than 2,300 team members and more than one million policies in force. Through affiliates, Alfa markets additional products in 11 more states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia). AM Best describes that outside business as non-standard auto coverage, sold under brands including Trexis, which serves drivers who do not qualify for standard rates.

History

The Alabama Farmers Federation was formed in 1921 as a unified voice for the state's farmers. Federation leaders founded Alfa Insurance in 1946 to protect rural residents, when the federation had 75,000 members. The federation now counts more than 350,000 members, and Alfa says it has served the Southeast for more than 80 years.

In Alabama, Alfa presents access to its insurance products as a benefit for qualifying members of the federation. Any Alabama resident can join, not only farmers, and annual dues also bring member perks such as travel and retail discounts. For how these arrangements work in other states, see Farm Bureau insurance: membership, eligibility and how it works.

Alfa built its non-standard auto business through its Trexis companies. In March 2022 Trexis One Insurance Corporation acquired Arizona Automobile Insurance Company, which markets non-standard auto for the Alfa group mainly in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada. Today the Alfa Insurance Group includes Alfa Mutual Insurance Company, Alfa Mutual Fire, Alfa Mutual General, Alfa General Insurance Corporation, Alfa Insurance Corporation and the Trexis companies, with Alfa Life Insurance Corporation writing life coverage. A separate Alfa Alliance unit has its own claims line.

Auto insurance coverage

Alfa's auto policy includes several benefits that go beyond a basic policy:

  • Liability, which also pays up to $50 a day in lost wages if Alfa asks a covered person to attend a hearing or trial.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage, with uninsured motorist property damage available to Georgia and Mississippi policyholders.
  • Medical payments, including up to $5,000 in funeral expenses and the cost of a hospital bed for a named insured staying overnight with an injured family member.
  • Loss of income, which pays 85% of monthly income, up to $750 a month for up to a year, after a disabling auto injury.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment and loss of sight coverage, as an option.
  • Comprehensive and collision, with up to $500 for clothing and luggage lost in a covered loss; collision also pays up to $250 in vet bills for an injured pet and up to $250 to replace a child's car seat.
  • Loss of use, paying $30, $40, $50 or $100 a day for a rental while your car is repaired.
  • Roadside assistance, available 24/7 for towing, fuel delivery, locksmith service, jump starts and tire changes.

Alfa's version of accident forgiveness is called Accident Waiver: your first at-fault accident will not automatically raise your premium. It is available only to Alabama and Mississippi residents.

Discounts and programs

Alfa's discount list leans heavily on occupation and affinity. Educators, first responders, full-time ministers and active farmers can get discounts in Alabama and Mississippi; active military members and state or federal employees qualify in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi; and employees of Alabama auto manufacturers have their own affinity discount. Policy bundling lowers the price further the more policies you carry.

Young drivers can earn the Youth Honor Student discount (unmarried full-time students aged 16 to 24 with a B average or similar), a driver training discount for ages 16 to 20, or a youth defensive driving discount for passing Alfa's test. A defensive driver discount requires a clean three-year record; in Alabama and Mississippi it is limited to drivers 55 and older, while Georgia has no age limit. Alfa does not list a telematics or usage-based insurance program among its auto discounts.

Claims

Alfa customers can report a claim through their MyAlfa online account or by calling 800-964-2532; people involved in an incident with an Alfa customer, and other insurers, can also call that number. Roadside assistance is requested through the same number: press 2 for claims or roadside, then 2 again, and you can choose a text-message "Rescue Link" that dispatches help without downloading an app. Trexis customers report claims at 877-584-7466, and Alfa Alliance customers at 855-253-2242.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best rates Alfa Mutual Insurance Company and its group members A (Excellent) for financial strength and issued rating notifications on the group in May 2026. In its 2022 review, AM Best assessed Alfa's balance sheet strength as strongest but its operating performance as marginal; in 2019 it had downgraded the issuer credit ratings of the group's members.

In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Alfa scored 654 in the Southeast region, 10th of 17 insurers and below the 659 regional average. Erie led that region at 691, and three Farm Bureau insurers from Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee all scored above Alfa.

Who it suits

Alfa suits households in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi who want a local agent and can take advantage of its occupation discounts, especially farmers, teachers, first responders, ministers and government employees. Its built-in extras, such as loss of income, pet and car seat benefits, add value for families. Alabama buyers should ask about Alabama Farmers Federation membership dues. Drivers elsewhere will generally find only Alfa's non-standard Trexis products.

  • Strengths: Generous built-in benefits (loss of income, pet injury, child seat replacement, lost-wage reimbursement); long list of occupation discounts; Accident Waiver in Alabama and Mississippi; A (Excellent) AM Best rating.
  • Weaknesses: Standard auto limited to three states; in Alabama, coverage is marketed as a benefit of paid federation membership; no telematics program; below the regional average in J.D. Power's 2026 Southeast ranking.
