Overview
Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee is the consumer brand of the Tennessee Farmers Insurance Companies, a group led by Tennessee Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Columbia, Tennessee. It sells auto, home, life and small business insurance only in Tennessee, through local Farm Bureau agents, and only to members of the Tennessee Farm Bureau.
The group ranked #33 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.07 billion in premiums and a 0.29% national share. All of that business is written in one state, so the entire book is concentrated in Tennessee.
The company has more than 500 agents, more than 350 claims professionals working from 16 regional claims centers, and more than 200 offices across the state, with roughly 900 employees. Tennessee Farmers Mutual is a mutual company owned by its policyholders.
History
Local farmers founded the company in 1948 to "take care of our own," starting with coverage for farm structures. It has since grown to insure more than 2 million homes, cars and small businesses, according to the company. In 1973 it added Tennessee Farmers Life Insurance Company, which the company says became the state's largest provider of individual life insurance. Tennessee Farmers Assurance Company is another member of the group.
The insurer is closely tied to the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation, which the company describes as the nation's largest state Farm Bureau organization, with more than 690,000 member families. Its agents sell only Farm Bureau products, working much like captive agents for the group. The company celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023. The Farm Bureau guide explains how state Farm Bureau insurers differ from one another.
Auto insurance coverage
Car insurance from Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee includes the core coverages most Tennessee drivers buy:
- Bodily injury liability and property damage liability, which most drivers use to meet Tennessee's financial responsibility law (see Tennessee).
- Collision coverage, with deductible choices that trade premium against out-of-pocket cost.
- Comprehensive coverage for fire, theft, flood, hail, vandalism, animal strikes and glass breakage.
- Medical payments for injuries to you or passengers in your car.
- Uninsured motorist bodily injury and uninsured motorist property damage, which also respond to underinsured drivers.
- Rental car reimbursement, paying a set amount per day for up to 30 days while your car is repaired or replaced after a comprehensive or collision loss.
- Roadside assistance reimbursement, paying a fixed amount for towing to the nearest service station, on-the-spot mechanical help or locksmith service.
The same agents also write motorcycle, RV and trailer, and boat and watercraft insurance.
Discounts and programs
The company's auto pages are less specific about discounts than many national carriers' pages. They point to the discounts that are common in Tennessee, such as safe driver, multi-car and multi-policy discounts for bundling car, home and life insurance, and direct shoppers to a local agent for details. The company does not advertise a telematics or app-based driving program on its auto pages, so drivers who want a usage-based discount will need to look at other carriers (see how usage-based programs work).
Membership in the Tennessee Farm Bureau costs $30 per family and is required to buy auto or property insurance from Farm Bureau Insurance. Members also get discounts on goods and services, access to health and safety programs and a quarterly magazine.
Claims
You can start a claim through your local agent, by calling 877-876-2222 at any hour, or online through the My Account portal. The company asks you to be ready with the cause and date of loss, and to report theft and vandalism to police. After an accident it recommends notifying the company as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours, with the names and insurance details of everyone involved, the damage, the location and time, and the police report number.
Claims are handled by more than 350 claims professionals across 16 regional claims centers in Tennessee. The company notes that if another driver caused the accident and it does not provide coverage or have a right of subrogation, its adjusters cannot pursue the other insurer on your behalf. See the claim filing guide for general steps.
