Overview

AAA – The Auto Club Group (ACG) is the second-largest AAA club in North America, with more than 14 million members across 14 states and two U.S. territories, and one of three large insurance groups that write AAA-branded car insurance. It ranked #18 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $2.65 billion in auto premiums and a 0.71% national share. Its NAIC group name, Automobile Club MI Group, reflects its Michigan base: the group is headquartered in Dearborn, and its lead insurer, Auto Club Insurance Association, is domiciled there.

Policies are sold only to AAA members, through AAA insurance agents and offices, by phone and online. ACG's chairman, president and CEO is Joseph J. Richardson, Jr.

Which AAA regions ACG serves

AAA is a federation of independent regional clubs, and each club decides which insurer writes its members' policies (see AAA car insurance: how the clubs and their insurers work). According to ACG, it provides AAA-branded auto, home and other personal insurance in 13 states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Its club territory also includes Colorado and Puerto Rico. In 2026 ACG affiliated with AAA Minneapolis, bringing its Minnesota membership to more than 830,000.

Members in other regions are insured by different AAA groups. CSAA Insurance Group underwrites AAA policies for Northern California, the Mountain West, much of the Mid-Atlantic and other areas, including Colorado. Auto Club Enterprises, the Automobile Club of Southern California's insurance group, serves Southern California, Texas and other clubs. In parts of Indiana, both ACG and CSAA serve AAA members, depending on the county and club.

History

ACG has grown by affiliating with other regional AAA clubs, most recently AAA Minneapolis in 2026, and its footprint now runs from Michigan and the Upper Midwest to Florida and the Carolinas. Its insurance companies reflect that growth. According to ACG's disclosures, personal auto policies are underwritten by:

• Auto Club Insurance Association: Illinois.
• MemberSelect Insurance Company: Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota and Tennessee.
• Auto Club Group Insurance Company: Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
• Auto Club Insurance Company of Florida and Auto Club South Insurance Company: Florida.
• The Members Insurance Company and Universal Insurance Company: North Carolina and South Carolina.

AM Best also lists Auto Club Property-Casualty Insurance Company, Meemic Insurance Company and Fremont Insurance Company as members of the group. Auto insurance coverage

ACG's AAA auto policies include liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist and, in no-fault states such as Michigan and Florida, personal injury protection. Optional coverages listed by ACG include:

• Enhanced Total Loss Replacement, which pays to replace a totaled car with a new model, subject to age, mileage and other limits.
• Loan Lease Gap, which covers the difference between a loan or lease balance and the car's actual cash value after a total loss (see gap insurance).
• Enhanced Exterior Repair, which uses original manufacturer exterior parts instead of aftermarket parts, excluding glass and mechanical parts (see OEM parts).
• Car rental coverage.

AAA membership, required to buy, adds AAA's emergency roadside service, which is separate from insurance-based roadside assistance coverage. ACG's AAA Accident Assist can arrange towing, a rental car and repairs after a crash.

Discounts and programs

ACG lists a AAA member discount that grows with years of membership, car and home bundling, and other discounts that vary by state and underwriting company. Its usage-based program, AAADrive, uses a smartphone app to score driving behavior and factor it into the auto rate, while giving real-time feedback aimed at reducing distracted driving. Drivers must opt in, download the app and register.

Claims

Auto and home claims can be filed online through ACG's claims portal, and glass claims through a separate online service. For questions, ACG directs policyholders to their assigned claim representative or the toll-free number on the back of their proof of insurance. Repairs at a AAA Insurance network collision repair facility carry a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the vehicle; you can also choose your own shop.

In the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, the Auto Club Group scored 697, tied for 13th of 20 insurers and just below the study average of 700.

Ratings and reputation

In May 2026 AM Best affirmed Auto Club Insurance Association and its affiliates at A (Excellent) and revised the outlook to stable from negative, citing a return to underwriting profitability after the group tightened underwriting and raised rates. AM Best rates the separate Auto Club Florida Group (Auto Club Insurance Company of Florida and Auto Club South Insurance Company) A- (Excellent) with a stable outlook.

Satisfaction results differ sharply by region. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, ACG ranked third of 14 in Florida (672, above the 639 average) but 18th of 20 in the North Central region, which includes Michigan (625, below the 645 average).

Who it suits

ACG suits AAA members in its 13 insurance states who want their car insurance, roadside service and membership perks from one organization, and drivers who want OEM-parts and new-car replacement options. Michigan drivers in particular should compare quotes, since ACG's satisfaction scores in the North Central region trail most competitors.
