AAA car insurance: how the clubs and their insurers work
AAA car insurance comes from different insurers depending on your regional club. Which group serves your area, the membership rule and how to compare.
AAA is not a single insurance company. It is a federation of independent regional auto clubs, and each club chooses which insurer writes its members' car insurance. Three large insurance groups write most AAA-branded auto policies: Auto Club Enterprises, CSAA Insurance Group and The Auto Club Group. You must be a AAA member to buy, and your policy, prices and discounts depend on the club that serves your address.
The three main AAA insurance groups
According to NAIC data for 2025 private passenger auto premiums:
| Group | National rank (2025) | 2025 auto premiums | Main territory |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAA | 9 | $7.05 billion | The Automobile Club of Southern California's insurance group; Southern California, Texas and other clubs |
| AAA | 13 | $5.07 billion | Northern and Central California, the Mountain West, much of the Mid-Atlantic; 23 states and D.C. in all |
| AAA | 18 | $2.65 billion | Michigan, Florida, the Upper Midwest, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas; 13 states |
Added together, these three groups wrote about $14.8 billion of auto premium in 2025, more than any single insurer outside the top five, but they are separate companies with separate pricing, policy forms and claims operations.
Who serves where
- CSAA Insurance Group issues policies through CSAA Insurance Exchange for AAA members in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming and D.C., plus Northern and Central California and selected counties of Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Its clubs include AAA Mountain West Group and AAA Club Alliance.
- The Auto Club Group (ACG), based in Dearborn, Michigan, writes AAA insurance in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin. It affiliated with AAA Minneapolis in 2026.
- Auto Club Enterprises serves Southern California and Texas members, among other clubs.
Borders are not always clean. In parts of Indiana, both ACG and CSAA serve members depending on county and club. And some club agencies, including AAA Club Alliance's, also sell policies from non-AAA insurers, so a policy bought at a AAA office is not always a AAA-group policy. Read the insurer's name on your quote.
Membership is required
All three groups sell only to AAA members. Membership is a separate purchase from your insurance, priced by your club, and it is what brings AAA's emergency road service, travel services, member discounts and, at some clubs, DMV services.
That road service is a membership benefit, not insurance. It is different from the roadside assistance coverage you can add to a car insurance policy, and having both can mean paying twice for towing. See roadside assistance coverage vs auto club membership.
Some groups give a discount for the membership itself. AAA Mountain West Group, a CSAA club, lists a discount of up to 5% for an active membership, and ACG lists a member discount that grows with years of membership.
Coverage and discounts
AAA auto policies include the standard coverages: liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and medical payments or PIP where required. Extras depend on the group:
- CSAA (via AAA Mountain West Group): New Car Added Protection, which replaces a new car without deducting depreciation, and rental coverage at a set daily amount.
- ACG: Enhanced Total Loss Replacement, Loan Lease Gap, Enhanced Exterior Repair using manufacturer exterior parts, and AAA Accident Assist for towing, rentals and repairs after a crash.
Discounts listed by AAA Mountain West Group include up to 20% for good drivers with clean records and at least 36 months of experience, up to 15.7% multi-car, up to 12.7% for bundling home and auto (a multi-policy discount) and up to 7% for a good student discount. ACG runs AAADrive, a smartphone usage-based insurance program. Discount lists differ by club, so compare club by club.
Ratings and satisfaction
Results differ by group and region, which is another reason to check the group that serves you:
- Financial strength: AM Best rated CSAA's group A (Excellent) as of July 2026 and ACG's A (Excellent) as of May 2026. CSAA had significant underwriting losses in 2023, raised rates and issued $500 million of surplus notes in February 2025 to rebuild capital. See AM Best rating.
- J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study: CSAA ranked highest in the Southwest region (653) and third in the Mid-Atlantic. ACG ranked third in Florida (672) but 18th of 20 in the North Central region.
- J.D. Power 2025 claims study: CSAA scored 720 (sixth of 20) and ACG 697 (tied for 13th), against a 700 average.
Is AAA car insurance a good fit?
AAA insurance tends to suit drivers who already value AAA membership and want road service, insurance and travel help from one organization, especially where the local group scores well. It suits less well if you do not want a membership, if you live where your club's insurer scores below average, or if you move often between regions served by different groups.
Worked example: counting the membership
Say a AAA insurer quotes $1,520 a year with a 5% membership discount already applied, and a non-AAA insurer quotes $1,500 for the same coverage (hypothetical figures). If the membership costs $70 a year, the AAA total is $1,590. If you would buy AAA membership anyway for road service, the fair comparison is $1,520 against $1,500 plus whatever roadside coverage you would add to the other policy.
How to shop AAA car insurance
- Find your club by ZIP code on AAA's website; it determines the insurer.
- Ask the agent which company will issue the policy.
- Get a quote for the same coverage you are pricing elsewhere.
- Add the membership cost, and subtract any roadside coverage you would otherwise buy.
- Compare ratings for your group and region with the compare auto insurers side by side and how to choose a car insurance company.
