Multi-policy discount

A reduction for buying more than one type of insurance, such as auto plus home or renters coverage, from the same company.

Also called: bundling discount, multi-line discount, home and auto discount, multiproduct discount

A multi-policy discount is what an insurer gives you for buying two or more kinds of coverage from it, most often auto with homeowners, renters or condo insurance, but sometimes with life, umbrella, motorcycle or boat policies. It is the price incentive behind bundling.

The discount is usually a percentage off one or both policies, and each line may get a different percentage. Say your auto policy costs $1,500 and your homeowners policy $1,800 when bought separately. With a 10% discount on each, the pair costs $2,970 instead of $3,300 (hypothetical figures). Advertised "save up to" figures sometimes combine several discounts, such as autopay, paperless and telematics, so ask what the bundle discount alone is worth.

A bundled price can still be higher than buying each policy from the cheapest separate company. Compare the total of the best standalone quotes with the bundled total, and remember that cancelling or changing one policy can change the price of the other. A bundle can also simplify things when one event damages both your car and your home, and some insurers offer a single deductible in that case. See bundling home and auto insurance: how the discount really works and when bundling does not save money.
