Overview

"Farm Bureau Group" is the plain group name the NAIC uses for Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance: Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho and its affiliate, Western Community Insurance Company. It is not a national Farm Bureau organization; each state's Farm Bureau insurer is separate, and this one is Idaho's. The group ranked #87 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $177.9 million in auto premium and a 0.05% national share.

Almost all of that premium is written in Idaho, where the NAIC's 2025 state data rank Farm Bureau Group third among private passenger auto insurers with about 10% of the market, behind only Progressive and State Farm. The company calls itself the largest property and casualty insurer headquartered in Idaho and the state's largest writer of farm and ranch insurance.

Policies are sold by local Farm Bureau agents. Policyholders also become members of the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation, which brings member discounts on hotels, car rentals, prescriptions and other services. Since 2024 the company has also sold in Washington through Western Community Insurance Company. For how Farm Bureau insurers work, see Farm Bureau insurance explained.

History

On May 1, 1947, a group of Idaho farmers and ranchers founded Idaho Farm Insurance Company, which later became Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Idaho. It began by selling only auto insurance from an office in Pocatello; premiums for its first 60 days totaled just over $10,000. Over the following decades it added home, farm and ranch, business and life coverage.

In 2024 the company restructured as Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho, owned by IFB Mutual Insurance Holding Company, a mutual holding company. In September 2023 it announced a partnership with the Washington Farm Bureau to sell to that organization's members, with sales beginning in 2024 through Western Community Insurance Company, which serves Idaho and Washington.

The biggest recent change came in 2025 and 2026. In September 2025 the boards of Mountain West Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, the Farm Bureau insurer for Wyoming and Montana, and IFB Mutual Insurance Holding Company approved a merger. In September 2026 the company announced it had received regulatory approval and completed the deal: Mountain West was converted into a stock company owned by IFB Mutual, and Mountain West and its affiliates, 360 Insurance Company and Mountain West Captive Re, joined the Idaho group. Mountain West keeps its own brand in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado. The combined organization reports about 250 agents, 450 employees, more than 130,000 members, more than $800 million in annualized premium and $1.2 billion in assets.

Todd Argall is President and CEO of Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Idaho and CEO of IFB Mutual Insurance Holding Company.

Auto insurance coverage

Idaho Farm Bureau's auto page describes liability, medical payments and collision coverage, comprehensive coverage (theft, hail, wind, fire), and a 24/7 roadside assistance program. Idaho law sets minimum bodily injury and property damage liability limits; agents help decide how much more coverage to carry and periodically review the policy with the customer. The same agents write motorcycle and recreational vehicle policies.

The company's quote form states that Idaho Farm Bureau Insurance only insures Idaho residents; Washington drivers are served by Western Community Insurance Company. The site does not list newer optional coverages such as gap, new car replacement or rideshare endorsements, so ask the agent what is available.

Discounts and programs

Listed auto discounts are safe driver, good student, mature driver, multiple car and package discounts (for bundling auto with home or farm policies). A 5% military discount applies to active-duty personnel and veterans on new or renewed home and personal auto policies (effective for policies new or renewed after March 25, 2023). A referral program gives a $25 gift card when someone you refer buys a policy.

No telematics or usage-based program is advertised. Membership in the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation, which has more than 70,000 members, adds non-insurance discounts.

Claims

Claims can be filed online or by calling the 24-hour Claimsline at 888-432-4527. The same line takes roadside assistance requests for covered vehicles, and glass repair or replacement can be arranged directly at 888-392-9673 with the shop of your choice. Your agent can also help with a claim.

Idaho Farm Bureau runs a Direct Repair Program with shops across East Idaho, the Magic Valley, North Idaho, Southeast Idaho, the Treasure Valley and Washington. It promises priority scheduling, direct billing between the insurer and the shop, estimate approvals and fewer days in a rental car. Policyholders manage accounts and bills through FB Hub, the company's online account and mobile app.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best upgraded Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of Idaho from A- (Excellent) to A (Excellent) in June 2023, its third consecutive annual upgrade, citing improved underwriting and operating performance. The company continued to cite an A (Excellent) rating in its September 2025 merger announcement. See AM Best ratings explained.

The company was named a Ward's Top 50 property-casualty performer in 2024 and again in 2025, based on 2020–2024 results. It is not among the regional leaders named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, where State Farm led the Northwest region. Idaho drivers can check complaint records with the Idaho Department of Insurance or the NAIC's consumer insurance search.

Who it suits

Idaho Farm Bureau suits Idaho households that want an in-state company with local agents, especially rural, farm and ranch families who can combine auto with farm, home and business coverage. Drivers who want detailed online coverage information, telematics discounts or coverage outside Idaho and Washington will find it limited.

  • Strengths: Third-largest auto insurer in Idaho in 2025; A (Excellent) AM Best rating; 24-hour claims line, regional direct repair network and FB Hub app; 5% military and veteran discount.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only in Idaho (and Washington through Western Community); short published coverage and discount lists; no telematics program; customer service phone hours are weekdays only.
