Who owns whom: car insurance brands and their parent companies

Which company owns each major car insurance brand, from GEICO and Esurance to The General, Dairyland, Bristol West and PURE, as of October 2026.

Many car insurance brands you see advertised belong to a handful of large groups. Esurance, National General and Direct Auto are part of Allstate; Bristol West, Foremost and 21st Century belong to the Farmers group; Dairyland and The General are owned by Sentry; and Infinity is part of Kemper. Knowing the parent tells you whose financial strength stands behind a brand and whether two "competing" quotes come from the same group.

Why ownership matters to a driver

  • Shopping: two brands from the same group may share pricing data and underwriting, so quoting both does not always widen your search as much as quoting an unrelated insurer.
  • Financial strength: ratings usually apply to the insurance companies in the group; check the company named on your policy.
  • Service and claims: a brand may keep its own claims operation or share the parent's.
  • Changes: when a brand is sold or retired, your policy usually continues, but billing, apps and phone numbers can change.

Some relationships look like ownership but are not:

How to find out who stands behind your policy

  1. Read your declarations page or ID card for the issuing company's legal name.
  2. Look up that company with your state insurance department to confirm it is licensed.
  3. Search the company's AM Best rating under its own name.
  4. Check the NAIC group name, which ties subsidiaries together in NAIC data and in our The 100 largest auto insurance companies in the U.S. ranking.
  5. Use the compare auto insurers side by side to compare groups side by side.

Key takeaways

  • A few large groups own many familiar brands: Allstate (National General, Esurance, Direct Auto), Farmers (Bristol West, Foremost, 21st Century), Sentry (Dairyland, The General) and Kemper (Infinity).
  • The General moved from American Family to Sentry at the end of 2024, and Liberty Mutual retired the Safeco name in April 2026.
  • Fred Loya and Freeway are separate businesses; Freeway is part of Confie.
  • Some links are management or fronting, not ownership, as with Palisades and Plymouth Rock or Markel and Hagerty.
  • Check the issuing company on your policy to know whose finances and ratings stand behind it.
