Overview

FMNE Insurance Company is the company long known as Farmers Mutual of Nebraska. It is a policyholder-owned mutual in Lincoln that sells auto, farm, home and umbrella insurance, plus motorcycle, recreational vehicle and dwelling policies, through more than 1,500 independent agents in Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. The NAIC records it as a single company rather than a group, which is why its listing reads "FMNE Insurance Co."

FMNE ranked #74 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $247.3 million in personal auto premium (about 0.07% of the U.S. market). Auto is its largest line: the company reports $726.8 million in total 2025 direct premiums written, of which auto made up 35.8%, farm 35.2% and home 25.1%.

FMNE describes itself as the largest Nebraska-based property and casualty insurer, the largest insurer of farms in Nebraska and South Dakota and the second-largest writer of personal lines coverage overall in Nebraska. Gayle M. Page is president and CEO. The company has more than 350 employees and 17 district claims field offices.

History

In 1891, 22 Nebraska farmers formed Farmers Mutual of Nebraska to insure one another's farms. The company stayed in Nebraska for more than a century, then expanded into South Dakota in 1998 and North Dakota in 2020. Its legal name for most of that time was The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Nebraska.

In 2025 the company began operating as FMNE Insurance Company, with the tagline "Always alongside you." The new name shortens the old one; the company remains a mutual owned by its policyholders, with its home office still in Lincoln. AM Best's 2024 rating action was issued under the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Nebraska name, and its 2026 action under FMNE Insurance Company.

Weather has shaped recent history. Heavy storm losses in 2022 and, to a lesser extent, 2023 cut into policyholder surplus, and in May 2024 AM Best moved the company's outlook to negative. That same year FMNE issued $100 million of 9% surplus notes due in 2044 to rebuild capital. Results then recovered sharply: net income rose from $11.0 million in 2024 to $97.3 million in 2025, and surplus grew from $442.9 million to $555.6 million.

FMNE does not own other consumer brands; all policies are sold under the FMNE name.

Auto insurance coverage

FMNE's auto policy offers the usual set of coverages, chosen with your agent:

  • Liability for injuries and property damage you cause, including legal defense; it can also follow you into a friend's car or a rental
  • Medical payments for you and your passengers
  • Collision and comprehensive for damage to your own vehicle
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
  • Optional emergency road service, which pays reasonable towing and labor costs when your vehicle breaks down

The company notes that the minimum liability limits in all three of its states are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage, and it encourages higher limits to protect assets. Separate FMNE policies cover motorcycles and recreational vehicles.

Discounts and programs

FMNE lists six auto discounts:

  • Multi-policy when auto is combined with a qualifying FMNE home, farm or dwelling policy (see multi-policy discount)
  • Multi-car credit for two or more vehicles on the same policy
  • Secondary vehicle discount for additional private passenger cars
  • Passive restraint for factory air bags
  • Driver training for household drivers under 21 who complete driver's education
  • Good student for drivers under 25 with satisfactory grades

FMNE does not advertise a telematics or usage-based program, accident forgiveness or new car replacement coverage.

Claims

FMNE encourages customers to report claims through their agent, who notifies the company. You can also report an auto or property claim online through your account (or without logging in), or call 800-742-7433. After hours, the same number connects to an emergency phone service for claims that need immediate attention; adjusters return after-hours voicemails within one business day.

Once a claim is filed, a company claims representative contacts you, may inspect and photograph the vehicle, prepares an itemized estimate and arranges repair or replacement once coverage is confirmed. FMNE uses its own adjusters based in offices across all three states. Glass-only claims go to LYNX Services at 800-806-2576. Roadside claims are handled by Quest Towing Services at 888-798-5695; Quest will also dispatch help at its own rates to drivers who did not buy the coverage.

Ratings and reputation

In June 2026 AM Best affirmed FMNE's A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a+" long-term issuer credit rating and revised the outlook to stable from negative, citing a large rebound in policyholder surplus in 2024, 2025 and early 2026. AM Best assesses FMNE's balance sheet strength as strongest. FMNE says it has been rated A (Excellent) or better continuously since 1922, longer than all but six property and casualty insurers.

The company reports a 2025 overall policy renewal rate of 89.7%. FMNE was not among the regional leaders named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Complaint records are available on the NAIC's Consumer Information Source; search under either the FMNE or Farmers Mutual of Nebraska name.

Who it suits

FMNE is a natural fit for Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota households, particularly farm families, who want auto, farm buildings and home insured by one long-established mutual with local adjusters and a local agent. Its financial strength and claims footprint across the three states are its main selling points. Shoppers who want extras such as accident forgiveness, a telematics discount or an online purchase will find a more basic product.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) rating held since 1922, with outlook back to stable in 2026; company-employed adjusters in 17 district offices; strong multi-policy fit for farm households; roadside help available even without the coverage.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only in three states and only through agents; short discount list; no telematics, accident forgiveness or new car replacement advertised; heavy farm and hail exposure made 2022 and 2023 difficult years financially.
