Overview

Infinity was a publicly traded company from 2003 to 2018 and, in Kemper's words, one of the largest nonstandard auto insurers in the country, focused on urban and Hispanic drivers. Since 2018 it has been owned by Kemper Corporation, and the name now means two things. Infinity Insurance Agency, Inc. (IIA), a Kemper subsidiary, sells personal and commercial auto insurance through Spanish-bilingual agents by phone and online. And a set of Kemper insurance companies still carry the Infinity name, such as Infinity Insurance Company, Infinity Auto Insurance Company and Infinity County Mutual Insurance Company in Texas.

Infinity does not report as a separate group. Its insurance companies belong to Kemper, so their premiums are counted in Kemper Corp Group, which ranked #17 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data. Kemper does not publish a separate premium figure for Infinity.

The agency serves Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas. It says it shops more than 20 carriers. The ones it names are Kemper Auto, Aspire, Bristol West, Foremost and Progressive, so an Infinity customer's policy may be written by a company outside Kemper.

History

Infinity Property and Casualty Corporation was set up in Ohio in September 2002 by American Financial Group (AFG) to take over AFG's personal auto business written through independent agents. AFG moved in its nonstandard auto companies — Atlanta Casualty, Infinity Insurance Company, Leader Insurance and Windsor Insurance — and Infinity also took on the agency-written personal lines of AFG's Great American Insurance Company through reinsurance. In February 2003 AFG sold 61% of Infinity in an initial public offering, and the shares traded on Nasdaq under the symbol IPCC.

Infinity was based in Birmingham, Alabama. By 2017 it focused on four states — Arizona, California, Florida and Texas — and on urban and Hispanic drivers. That year it wrote about $1.4 billion in gross premiums, 46% of it in California, had about 2,300 employees and sold through roughly 10,600 independent agencies. It also wrote commercial auto for small businesses and classic car coverage under the Classic Collector name.

Kemper agreed to buy Infinity on February 13, 2018, and closed the deal on July 2, 2018. Kemper put the cash-and-stock price at about $1.6 billion based on its share price at closing.

Since then Kemper has folded Infinity's insurance business into its own brand. Kemper's annual report for 2025 says its specialty auto segment operates in 22 states under the Kemper Auto brand and names only Kemper Auto and Kemper Life as brands. Kemper's own website still refers to "Infinity, a Kemper company" for claims and roadside help. The Infinity Insurance Agency has become a multi-carrier agency. Infinity's parent is also under strain: AM Best moved Kemper's outlook to negative in September 2026, and Stephen J. McAnena became Kemper's CEO on June 1, 2026.

Auto insurance coverage

Through its partner carriers, Infinity Insurance Agency quotes liability-only policies at state minimums, "full coverage" with collision and comprehensive, and options in between. It handles SR-22 and FR-44 filings: once the premium is paid, it files the SR-22 electronically with the state motor vehicle or public safety department. It also offers non-owner policies, including non-owner SR-22s for people who drive but do not own a car.

The agency works with drivers who have a foreign driver's license or a Matrícula Consular, the ID card issued by Mexican consulates (see getting car insurance with a foreign or new license). It also covers drivers with less-than-perfect records. For small businesses it sells commercial auto for fleets of one vehicle up to mid-size fleets, including contractor trucks, cargo vans, delivery cars and trailers, and it accepts foreign licenses for those policies too. Motorcycle insurance is sold through Progressive, and ATV coverage is also available.

What a policy covers depends on the carrier and state you are placed with.

Discounts and programs

Because Infinity is now an agency, discounts come from the carrier that writes your policy. The agency says its carriers offer discounts for a clean driving record, multiple cars on one policy, good grades, having a homeowners policy and paying the premium in full. If you are placed with Kemper Auto, its own list includes advance quote, proof of prior insurance, defensive driving course and the Kemper Co-Pilot telematics discount in select states.

Infinity does not have a telematics program under its own name. Its main selling points are service in Spanish, same-day digital ID cards, low SR-22 filing fees and comparing more than one nonstandard carrier in a single call.

Claims

Infinity Insurance Agency does not handle claims itself. Claims go to the carrier that issued the policy, whose name is on your ID card. The agency publishes each partner's claims number, and its bilingual agents at 855-478-3705 can help if you are not sure where to start.

For policies written by Kemper (policy numbers beginning with 10 or 50), report claims to Kemper at 800-353-6737 (800-3KEMPER), or online at kemper.com. Roadside assistance for Kemper Auto and "Infinity, a Kemper company" policies is available 24/7 at 877-512-6964 if you bought that coverage. Other carriers' numbers are listed in the table below.

Neither Infinity nor Kemper is ranked in the J.D. Power U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study.

Ratings and reputation

Financial strength. The Infinity-named insurers are members of Kemper Property & Casualty Group. On September 11, 2026, AM Best affirmed the group's A- (Excellent) financial strength rating but revised the outlook to negative. It cited earnings deterioration through late 2025 and early 2026, heavy reliance on California auto and the state's 2025 increase in minimum liability limits, which raised claim costs. Policies placed by the agency with other carriers carry those carriers' ratings. See AM Best financial strength ratings explained.

Customer satisfaction. Infinity is not ranked separately in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Kemper scored 541 in California, tied for 14th of 16 and well below the region's 633 average.

Who it suits

Infinity suits Spanish-speaking drivers and drivers with a foreign license, a Matrícula Consular, a suspended license or an SR-22 requirement who want a bilingual agent to compare several nonstandard carriers in one call. Small-business owners who need commercial auto with similar flexibility can use it too. Shoppers should note which carrier actually writes their policy, because claims service, discounts and financial strength depend on that company rather than on Infinity.

  • Strengths: Spanish-bilingual agents; accepts foreign licenses and Matrícula Consular; quotes Kemper Auto, Bristol West, Aspire, Foremost and Progressive; fast electronic SR-22 filing and non-owner options.
  • Weaknesses: Serves only 11 states; claims handled by whichever carrier writes the policy; Kemper's AM Best outlook turned negative in September 2026; Kemper ranked near the bottom in California in the J.D. Power 2026 study.
