Overview
Mutual of Enumclaw is a policyholder-owned regional insurer based in Enumclaw, Washington, southeast of Seattle. It sells personal home and auto insurance, business insurance, and farm and ranch insurance in seven Western states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming. NAIC's 2025 market share report ranked Mutual of Enumclaw Group #101 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by direct premiums written, just outside the top 100.
As a mutual insurance company, it has no stockholders; its customers, which it calls members, are its owners. It sells only through local independent agents, and its website says that is the only way to buy its coverage. In 2025 it earned nearly $467 million in gross premium across all lines and paid more than $308 million in losses. Bob Otis became president and CEO in April 2025.
History
In 1898 residents of the farm town of Enumclaw formed the Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company, sharing losses among members. It insured Washington farms until the late 1940s, when it began covering families. It expanded into Oregon and Idaho in 1952 and began writing commercial insurance for main-street businesses in 1963. The company took the name Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Company on May 1, 1966.
Later growth took it into Utah in 2002, Arizona in April 2014, Montana in January 2018 and Wyoming in April 2020. In December 2002 it launched Enumclaw Property and Casualty Insurance Company in Washington to reach new markets and products; together the two insurers make up the Enumclaw Insurance Group that AM Best rates. The company celebrated its 125th year in 2023, and in 2026 it rolled out a refreshed logo and brand, stating that its name, ownership, coverage and pricing were unchanged.
The last few years were difficult financially. AM Best reported in January 2024 that the group's surplus had fallen roughly 31%, or $134 million, from the end of 2021 through the first nine months of 2023. The company says it cut costs, bought more reinsurance and repriced in 2025, improving its combined ratio to 100.5 from 117.5 and producing $4.2 million of underwriting profit, its first since 2021, and a record $50 million in net income including investments.
Auto insurance coverage
Auto coverage is sold both on its own and in the Member's Best home and auto bundle, which the company highlights. Auto policies include bodily injury and property damage liability, personal injury protection or medical payments depending on the state, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and physical damage coverage. The Member's Best bundle adds complimentary towing and roadside service, emergency expenses such as transportation or a hotel when you need a tow, and free repair of windshield rock chips with no surcharge (Arizona members are told glass claims may affect their experience discount). The same bundle can cover cars, campers, trailers, motor homes and motorcycles, and add home extras such as identity fraud expense and service line coverage.
Mutual of Enumclaw also writes boat insurance and a personal excess liability (umbrella) policy. Exact auto options vary by state, so the agent is the place to confirm what is available.
Discounts and programs
The website lists fewer named discounts than most carriers. The main ones are bundling home and auto in Member's Best, and the teenSMART driver training program: members can enroll for $69.95, and listed household drivers up to age 21 who complete it earn an auto discount. Paperless billing saves $2 on installment service charges. The company does not offer a paid-in-full discount, though paying in full avoids installment fees. No telematics or usage-based program is listed. Agents can quote other discounts that apply; see car insurance discounts: the complete list for the common types.
Claims
Claims can be reported 24 hours a day at 877-425-2580, online through the member site, or in the mobile app, which also shows ID cards and requests roadside assistance. Glass claims go through Safelite. After a claim is filed, an adjuster is assigned to explain coverage and evaluate the loss, which may include an inspection. People who are not members can start a claim through a separate non-member process on the website.
Ratings and reputation
The company reports an AM Best Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) for 2025. AM Best affirmed that rating for Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance Company and Enumclaw Property & Casualty in January 2024 but revised the outlook to negative because of the capital erosion described above; a more recent AM Best action was not found.
Mutual of Enumclaw was not ranked in the Northwest region of the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, where PEMCO was the only regional carrier in the rankings, nor in the 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. Seattle Business magazine has named it one of Washington's best companies to work for 14 years in a row.
Who it suits
Mutual of Enumclaw suits households in its seven states who want a local independent agent, prefer a mutual over a stock company, and plan to insure home and auto together to get Member's Best extras such as roadside service and rock-chip repair. Rural and farm families also benefit from its farm and ranch line. It suits less well drivers who want to buy online, earn usage-based discounts, or live outside the West. See regional car insurers: when smaller carriers can beat the giants for how regional mutuals compare with national brands.
- Strengths: Policyholder-owned mutual with 125-plus years in the region; independent agents who can compare it with other carriers; Member's Best bundle with roadside, emergency expense and rock-chip repair; 24/7 claims line and app.
- Weaknesses: Sold in only seven states and only through agents; no telematics program and few published discounts; no paid-in-full discount; negative AM Best outlook after 2021-2023 losses; not ranked by J.D. Power.
