Overview

Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance is the insurance arm of the Virginia Farm Bureau. The property and casualty policies are written by Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and two affiliates, Virginia Farm Bureau Town & Country Insurance Company and Virginia Farm Bureau Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, all based in Richmond. They sell auto, home, farm, business and umbrella coverage only in Virginia, through local Farm Bureau agents in more than 100 offices around the state. Life insurance is underwritten by Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company.

The Virginia Farm Bureau group ranked #78 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $232.6 million in personal auto premium (about 0.06% of the U.S. market).

Like other Farm Bureau insurers, it requires membership. Buying a policy makes you a member of your county Farm Bureau, with $40 annual dues that support the federation's agricultural advocacy and come with member discounts on hotels, rental cars, tires, prescriptions and farm equipment. Membership is open to everyone, not only farmers; see how Farm Bureau insurance works.

History

The Virginia Farm Bureau Federation was founded in 1926 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan agricultural advocacy group and is part of the American Farm Bureau Federation. It has about 135,000 members in Virginia and lobbies on farm issues such as eminent domain, conservation funding and local control over utility-scale solar projects.

Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1950 to add value to membership, starting with affordable farmowners coverage for farmers. It later extended the same products to all Virginians. The company says it has been the largest farm insurer in Virginia continuously since 2001 and has been named to the Ward's 50 list of top-performing insurers in several years. It sells property and casualty insurance only in Virginia.

Auto insurance coverage

Virginia Farm Bureau offers the standard coverages, including liability, collision, other than collision (comprehensive), a medical expense benefit, income loss benefits and uninsured motorist coverage, which also applies when the at-fault driver's insurance is not enough to cover the damage.

Optional coverages are unusually broad for a single-state carrier:

  • Accident forgiveness: your rate will not rise after your first at-fault accident, and later at-fault accidents may also be forgiven; see accident forgiveness
  • New vehicle replacement: if a new car or truck is totaled in its first two years, it is replaced with a new vehicle of the same make and model, a form of new car replacement
  • Loan/lease payoff for the gap between your loan balance and the car's actual cash value
  • Rideshare (TNC) coverage that fills gaps in Uber, Lyft and delivery-company policies from the moment you turn on the app; see rideshare endorsement
  • Pet coverage, built into comprehensive, for vet bills or a death benefit if your dog or cat is hurt in an accident
  • Transportation expenses such as a rental car while your vehicle is repaired
  • Towing and labor, which also automatically includes roadside assistance
  • Electronic equipment and customized equipment coverage, plus death indemnity, media, extended non-owned auto and joint ownership coverages

Discounts and programs

Virginia Farm Bureau's usage-based program, Drive2Save, gives drivers who enroll a participation discount of up to 10%, which can rise to as much as 30% for the safest drivers. Like most telematics programs, it monitors driving habits; see how usage-based insurance works before enrolling.

Other published discounts:

  • Teen driver discounts of up to 25% for teens with good grades and responsible driving habits
  • Good driver savings of up to 5% for households without accidents or violations
  • New policy discounts of up to 25% for new customers with safe driving records
  • Safety features discounts of up to 30% for equipment such as anti-lock brakes

Members also get access to Farm Bureau member deals unrelated to insurance.

Claims

Claims can be reported 24/7 at 800-452-7714 (press 3 for a new claim, then 1 for glass only) or online through your vafb.com account. Glass-only claims can be filed online, and the company will help schedule installation with Safelite or another local installer. Roadside assistance for policyholders with towing and labor coverage is available 24/7 at the same number (press 2).

If you are unsure whether a loss is worth filing, the claims department takes questions at 800-447-8323. The company also offers a downloadable auto claim worksheet listing the information you will need.

Ratings and reputation

As of October 2026, Virginia Farm Bureau's website lists an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best, a rating it reports holding each year from 2020 through 2026. The company also reports recognition from Ward's for personal lines claims customer experience from 2022 through 2025.

Virginia Farm Bureau was not among the regional leaders named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (Erie Insurance led the Mid-Atlantic region). Complaint records for each Virginia Farm Bureau company can be looked up on the NAIC's Consumer Information Source.

Who it suits

Virginia Farm Bureau suits Virginians who are comfortable paying annual membership dues and want a local agent, a telematics discount and extras that many carriers charge more for or do not offer, such as forgiveness that can extend past the first accident, two-year new vehicle replacement and built-in pet coverage. Its 100-plus local offices reach rural counties as well as cities, but the coverage cannot follow you if you move out of state.

  • Strengths: Drive2Save telematics discount of up to 30%; accident forgiveness, new vehicle replacement and rideshare coverage; 24/7 claims and roadside line; A (Excellent) AM Best rating.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only in Virginia; $40 annual membership required; best savings require sharing driving data; quotes and service run through local agents and offices.
