Overview

North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance is the insurance group affiliated with the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation. Its lead company, North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, is based in Raleigh and is owned and controlled by its policyholders through an elected board of directors. It writes auto, homeowners, renters, farm, business and liability insurance, and its agents also offer life insurance and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina health plans.

The group ranked #35 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.04 billion in premiums and a 0.28% national share. It sells only in North Carolina, where it says it has built the largest domestic property and casualty insurance company in the state, with more than $2.7 billion in assets and more than $1.8 billion in annual premium across all lines.

Every customer is assigned a local agent, and the company has offices in all 100 North Carolina counties. Its agents sell Farm Bureau products, working much like captive agents.

History

The North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation was formed in 1936 as a nonprofit general farm organization to give farmers a unified voice. In 1953 Farm Bureau leaders, concerned that farmers and rural communities lacked access to insurance, formed North Carolina Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. The company began with a mission to provide affordable coverage to farmers and has since expanded to farm and non-farm policyholders alike in every county.

As a mutual, it has no outside shareholders; policyholders elect the board. The company says it has remained faithful to its original mission of serving North Carolina Farm Bureau members in every community. The Farm Bureau guide explains how state Farm Bureau insurers relate to the national federation and to one another.

Auto insurance coverage

North Carolina Farm Bureau writes personal auto coverage for North Carolina drivers, including the liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage the state requires, plus collision and comprehensive (which the policy calls "other than collision"). Two optional coverages come up often in its claims guidance:

  • Extended transportation expenses coverage reimburses rental car costs when a covered auto cannot be driven for at least 24 hours. Without it, policyholders with comprehensive coverage have only limited rental coverage after a theft, with a 48-hour waiting period.
  • Towing and labor coverage pays for roadside towing and on-scene labor and can be claimed online.

Glass damage falls under comprehensive coverage in North Carolina, so the comprehensive deductible applies to windshield replacement, but the company waives the deductible for chip repairs. North Carolina's minimum limits and rules are on the North Carolina state page.

Discounts and programs

The company's website does not publish a detailed auto discount list; agents quote discounts individually. It does not advertise a telematics or app-based driving program on its site.

According to the company, North Carolina Farm Bureau membership is what gives you access to its insurance products and a personally assigned local agent. Membership costs $25 a year for a household and also brings member benefits such as hotel and car rental discounts, prescription drug and vision savings, and a magazine, North Carolina Field and Family.

Payment options include E-Bill and electronic funds transfer; monthly payment plans require one of the two, and a $3 service charge is added to each installment on most policies.

Claims

Policyholders can report a claim by calling their local agent, online with or without a customer portal account, or in the NCFBINS app. Auto, towing and labor, and property claims can all be filed online, and people who are not customers can report a claim against a North Carolina Farm Bureau policyholder online if they have the policy number.

For windshield and window damage, a 24/7 glass line at 800-555-3276 (1-800-555-FARM) schedules repairs through a third-party network that works in all 50 states and can send mobile repair crews. The company does not require customers to use particular body shops or glass companies. If another driver's insurer is slow to pay, customers with collision coverage can file under their own policy and the company will try to recover the deductible through subrogation. Questions about claims go to customer service at 919-782-1705 on weekdays from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.

Ratings and reputation

The company states on its website that it holds an AM Best financial strength rating of A- (Excellent), as of October 2026 (see how AM Best ratings work).

In 2026 Forbes, working with Statista and a survey of more than 18,000 customers, ranked North Carolina Farm Bureau 11th in the nation for auto insurance and 11th for homeowners insurance, according to the company. The company has also warned policyholders that scammers have been targeting North Carolina Farm Bureau customers and publishes guidance on spotting fraud. Complaints about any insurer in the state can be filed with the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Who it suits

North Carolina Farm Bureau suits North Carolina residents who want a named local agent in their county, value a policyholder-owned company, and want to bundle auto with home, farm or life coverage. It does not suit drivers who move out of state, shoppers who want a telematics discount, or people who prefer to buy and manage a policy entirely online without an agent.

  • Strengths: Offices in all 100 counties with a dedicated agent for each customer; policyholder-owned mutual with an A- (Excellent) AM Best rating; free choice of body shop and glass shop; deductible waived for windshield chip repair; ranked 11th nationally for auto by Forbes in 2026.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only in North Carolina; requires a $25 annual Farm Bureau membership; no advertised telematics program; customer service phone hours are limited to weekdays.
