Overview

Acuity is a mutual insurer based in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, owned by its policyholders rather than stockholders. It is best known as a commercial insurer: the company says it insures more than 125,000 businesses, including 300,000 commercial vehicles, along with nearly half a million homes and private passenger autos. Acuity ranked #58 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $414.2 million, or 0.11% of the national market.

Acuity writes property and casualty insurance in more than 30 states and sells only through independent agents, though customers can also call the company directly; Acuity says a company employee answers when you call. Personal auto availability varies by state. In Texas, Acuity's personal auto coverage is offered by Acuity TX MGA, Inc. and underwritten by Home State County Mutual Insurance Company, an unaffiliated Texas county mutual. So a Texas Acuity policy carries another insurer's name.

History

Acuity has been in business since 1925 and remains a mutual company. It redesigned its heart-shaped logo in 2016 to reflect the relationship among its employees, its independent agents and its customers. It raised a 70-by-140-foot American flag on a 400-foot flagpole, which it calls the world's tallest symbol of freedom. It says its annual reports are known for their creative format, and it reports giving more than $21 million to charity over the past 10 years. Commercial lines remain the core of the business, and the company describes itself as the only commercial regional insurer rated A+ by both AM Best and S&P. Personal auto, home and recreational vehicle coverage are offered alongside, often to the same households and business owners.

Auto insurance coverage

Acuity's auto policy includes liability, medical payments or personal injury protection (depending on state rules), uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, collision and comprehensive. Several features go beyond a basic policy:

  • Vehicle replacement: for a small added premium, a car five model years old or newer that is totaled in a covered loss (other than fire or theft) is replaced with a new car of the same or similar model. Older totaled vehicles are paid at 25% above their current value. See how new car replacement works.
  • Full glass: windshield and window repair or replacement without the comprehensive deductible (full glass coverage).
  • Seatbelt benefit: medical payments limits increase automatically if the injured person was wearing a seatbelt, where applicable.
  • Uninsured motorist property damage: Acuity pays to fix your car first and then pursues the uninsured driver.

Optional add-ons include towing and labor with 24/7 emergency roadside service, loan/lease gap coverage, and temporary transportation expenses for a rental, bus, rideshare or taxi. A personal auto enhancements endorsement adds key and lock replacement, personal property in the car, travel expenses after an accident, vet bills if your dog or cat is hurt, and airbag replacement. In certain states it also adds accidental death and disability benefits. The endorsement also covers rental car loss-of-use and diminished value charges. The Road and Residence program packages auto, home and other personal coverage into one policy.

Discounts and programs

Acuity lists savings of up to 20% for having two or more policies with the company, a multi-car discount, and credit for time insured with a previous company. Driver discounts cover good students and graduates with a B average or better, accident prevention courses, and an accident-, violation- and claim-free record. Paying in full and vehicle crash-prevention technology also earn discounts. Acuity's website does not list a telematics or usage-based program.

Claims

Claims can be reported 24 hours a day at 800-242-7666, online, through the Acuity app or through your agent. Acuity assigns a single point of contact for each claim and reports 96% claims satisfaction in its 2025 insured and claimant surveys. Collision repairers rate it well. In the 2026 CRASH Network Insurer Report Card, a survey of repair shops, Acuity ranked fifth nationally and first in the Great Lakes region, according to the company. Roadside assistance is available 24/7 at 866-732-1466 or through the app.

Ratings and reputation

Acuity's website states that AM Best rated it A+ (Superior) on February 6, 2026, and S&P rated it A+ on October 25, 2025. Acuity is not ranked as a brand in J.D. Power's regional auto insurance studies.

Who it suits

Acuity suits drivers who want a well-capitalized mutual with strong coverage add-ons and an independent agent, particularly business owners and homeowners who can package policies. Shoppers who want to buy online without an agent, or who want a telematics discount, will find fewer options.

  • Strengths: A+ ratings from AM Best and S&P; vehicle replacement and full glass options; broad enhancements endorsement; strong standing with repair shops; up to 20% multi-policy savings.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only through agents; no telematics program on its website; personal auto is a smaller part of a commercial-focused company; in Texas the policy is issued by an unaffiliated county mutual.
