Overview

The Cincinnati Insurance Company is the lead subsidiary of Cincinnati Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: CINF), headquartered in Fairfield, Ohio. The group ranked #30 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.22 billion in auto premiums and a 0.33% national share.

Cincinnati sells only through independent agencies. Commercial lines are its largest segment, at 48% of 2025 net written premiums, versus 33% for personal lines. Personal auto has grown quickly, from $809 million of net written premiums in 2023 to $1.21 billion in 2025, though homeowners insurance is the bigger personal line. Its personal lines business is marketed in 45 states through about 2,670 agency locations, roughly 72% of its agency locations. At the end of 2025 those agencies had placed about 1.3 million personal lines policies covering around 550,000 policyholders. Cincinnati writes personal insurance as accounts: about 86% of its homeowner policies were paired with a Cincinnati auto policy in the same account. It serves clients across the wealth spectrum, and since 2023 its coverage for affluent households has been branded Cincinnati Private Client; see high-net-worth auto insurance: what private client carriers add.

History

Four independent agents, John J. Schiff, Robert Schiff, Chester Field and Harry Turner, formed The Cincinnati Insurance Company in 1950 with the goal of being the best company serving independent agents. It issued its first policy on January 25, 1951, and in 1955 expanded from Ohio into Kentucky and Indiana, the start of a gradual national expansion through local agencies.

Cincinnati Financial Corporation was created as the holding company in 1968. The group opened its current headquarters campus in Fairfield in 1985, passed $1 billion in direct written premiums in 1991 and joined the S&P 500 in 1997. Later diversification included an excess and surplus lines company in 2007, the reinsurer Cincinnati Re in 2015, and the 2019 acquisition of Lloyd's of London Syndicate 318, now Cincinnati Global Underwriting. In 2023 it rebranded its high-net-worth personal lines as Cincinnati Private Client. Stephen M. Spray became CEO of Cincinnati Financial in 2024, and the company celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025.

Auto insurance coverage

A Cincinnati auto policy can cover all of a household's private passenger cars, motorcycles, motor homes and classic cars on one policy, with one bill, one renewal date and one agent. Standard coverages include liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured and underinsured motorist, and medical payments.

Several features stand out:

  • Rental vehicles. Liability coverage for a car you rent pays claims through your auto policy's liability limit, with no deductible in most states.
  • Collector cars. Antique and collector vehicles can sit on the same policy as everyday cars, with no minimum vehicle age; a covered total loss is paid at an agreed settlement amount that does not depreciate.
  • Replacement Cost Plus. An optional endorsement combining replacement cost and gap coverage for newer cars.
  • Gap coverage. Available on its own to pay the difference between a totaled car's value and a loan or lease balance; see gap insurance.
  • Personal Auto Plus. An optional endorsement that adds windshield glass replacement with no deductible (a form of full glass coverage), airbag replacement, roadside assistance, lock replacement, child safety seat replacement, transportation expenses and more.

Discounts and programs

Cincinnati does not publish a full discount list; independent agents quote rates and apply discounts. Its account approach rewards placing home and auto together, and its usage-based program, RideWell, offers a discount at sign-up and further discounts at renewal based on driving scores. RideWell uses a smartphone app to score braking, speeding and phone distraction, and agents handle enrollment. See telematics programs from the major insurers compared for how it fits among similar programs.

Claims

Auto, home and business claims can be reported day or night at 877-242-2544 or online through a Cincinnati account, and the MyCincinnati app can also be used to manage policies. Cincinnati emphasizes person-to-person claims handling, and its annual report says it relies on 2,195 field associates who live in the communities its agents serve. Its fraud investigations are supported by a data analytics group and a computer forensics lab.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating of Cincinnati's property/casualty companies on March 5, 2026, with a stable outlook. AM Best cited the strongest level of risk-adjusted capital, favorable reserve development for more than 30 consecutive years and underwriting profits every year since 2012. AM Best's records show The Cincinnati Insurance Company has been rated A or better every year since 1955.

In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Cincinnati Insurance scored 655 in the North Central region (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin), fifth of 20 insurers and above the 645 regional average; Erie led at 688. Cincinnati was not ranked in other regions or in J.D. Power's 2025 claims satisfaction study.

Who it suits

Cincinnati suits homeowners who want an independent agent to place their home, cars, collector vehicles and umbrella with one strong carrier, and it is especially relevant for affluent households through Cincinnati Private Client. Its rental-car liability treatment, collector-car agreed settlement and Personal Auto Plus extras add value for drivers who want broad coverage. It is less suited to drivers who want to buy online without an agent, who need only cheap minimum coverage, or who want to compare published discount lists.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best rating affirmed in March 2026 with underwriting profits every year since 2012; fifth of 20 in J.D. Power's 2026 North Central ranking; collector cars and everyday cars on one policy with agreed settlement; RideWell telematics discount.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only through independent agents, with no direct online purchase; few published discounts; personal lines are a smaller segment than commercial lines; not ranked in J.D. Power's claims satisfaction study.
