Overview

Westfield is an Ohio property and casualty insurer that sells personal auto and home insurance only through independent agents. The group's lead company is Ohio Farmers Insurance Company, and Westfield has been the brand since 1971. Westfield ranked #56 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $475.4 million, or 0.13% of the national market.

Personal auto is a regional product. Westfield writes personal insurance in nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and West Virginia. Its larger business is commercial insurance, sold in 21 states, plus surety bonds in all 50 states and an international specialty arm. The company reports about 2,800 employees and is headquartered in Westfield Center, Ohio, south of Cleveland. Ed Largent is chief executive officer and board chair. Westfield does not sell directly to consumers; it says it chooses its appointed agencies carefully, so your first contact for quotes, policy changes and many service questions is a local agent.

History

Westfield traces its origin to the fall of 1847, when a group of Medina County farmers met in a general store to find a better way to protect their property from fire. The Ohio General Assembly chartered the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Medina County on February 8, 1848. Key milestones from the company's timeline:

  • 1862: Renamed Ohio Farmers Insurance Company.
  • 1877: First expansion outside Ohio, into Indiana.
  • 1929: Formed Ohio Farmers Indemnity Company.
  • 1971: Adopted the Westfield Companies brand.
  • 1984: Launched WesPak, which combines home and auto coverage in a single policy.
  • 2001 and 2005: Chartered Westfield Bank and set up the Westfield Insurance Foundation.
  • 2021 and 2023: Established Westfield Specialty, which acquired Lloyd's of London Syndicate 1200 in 2023, taking the company international.

Westfield celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2023.

Auto insurance coverage

A Westfield auto policy includes the usual building blocks: liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments, personal injury protection where applicable, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Optional extras include loan/lease gap coverage and roadside assistance for flat tires, jump-starts and fuel delivery.

The distinctive product is WesPak. Most insurers "bundle" separate home and auto policies; WesPak combines them in one package policy with one bill. Westfield says it builds in one-year replacement cost on new vehicles, transportation expense coverage and a common loss deductible, so you pay one deductible when a single event damages both your home and car. WesPak Estate is the high-value version, with guaranteed replacement cost on the home and higher liability limits. Antique cars, campers, RVs, motorcycles and boats can be added to either package.

Discounts and programs

Westfield's auto page lists three discounts: a safe driver discount through MissionSafe, an advance quote discount for quoting before your policy starts, and a loyalty discount for long-time customers. Package and multi-policy savings come through WesPak.

MissionSafe is Westfield's telematics program. According to Westfield, drivers get 10% off just for signing up, average savings are 20% and savings can reach 40%. Westfield also promotes it for teen drivers, since parents can review their teen's driving data. WesPak and homeowners customers can also get a free Ting electrical-fire sensor for three years. Compare it with other insurer telematics programs.

Claims

Westfield takes auto claims 24/7 through the MyWestfield online portal or at 800-243-0210, option 3. Glass-only claims can be filed online or through Westfield Glass Service at 800-810-3665; have your policy number, the date of the incident and your vehicle identification number ready. Roadside assistance, if you added it, is requested through a self-service portal or at 877-787-9078. If you paid a tow provider yourself, you can submit a reimbursement request. Westfield's website cites an 89% claims satisfaction rate.

Ratings and reputation

Westfield states that AM Best has rated it A (Excellent) or higher for financial strength every year since 1934. As displayed on its website in October 2026, the rating is A (Excellent). Westfield is not one of the brands J.D. Power ranks in its regional auto insurance studies. The company says Forbes and Statista named it one of America's best home and auto insurance companies.

Who it suits

Westfield suits homeowners in its nine states who want an agent to manage a combined home-and-auto package, and families with teen drivers who would use MissionSafe. Renters and people who want to buy directly online have fewer reasons to choose it, and drivers outside the nine states cannot buy its personal auto coverage.

  • Strengths: WesPak single policy with a common loss deductible and new-vehicle replacement cost; MissionSafe discount of up to 40%; more than 175 years in business; A (Excellent) AM Best rating.
  • Weaknesses: Personal auto sold in only nine states; no direct online purchase, only through agents; short published discount list; commercial lines are the larger business.
