Overview

American International Group (AIG) appears in the NAIC auto rankings, but it no longer markets personal auto insurance under its own name. The premiums come from high-net-worth auto policies issued by AIG insurance companies and sold and serviced by Private Client Select Insurance Services (PCS), an independent managing general agency created in 2023 from AIG's former Private Client Group. This AIG business ranked #69 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $272.6 million, or 0.07% of the national market.

PCS is a managing general agency: it designs products, underwrites and services policies under authority delegated by insurers, but it does not carry the risk itself. According to its legal notice, the policies are underwritten by AIG member companies, including AIG Property Casualty Company, AIG Assurance Company, American Home Assurance Company, National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh, Pa., New Hampshire Insurance Company and several others. PCS was formed by AIG and funds managed by private equity firm Stone Point Capital, which together hold a majority stake.

PCS serves high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth households, typically alongside homeowners, fine art and collectibles, yacht and excess liability coverage. It sells through independent agents and brokers, not directly to consumers, and lists its principal address in St. Petersburg, Florida.

History

AIG spent years building its Private Client Group (PCG) into a major U.S. high-net-worth insurer. In 2019 it announced Syndicate 2019 at Lloyd's, managed by its Talbot unit and supported by significant third-party capital, to exclusively reinsure PCG business, including homeowners, auto, collections, yacht and umbrella coverage; the syndicate received approval to begin underwriting in May 2020.

The business was then restructured:

  • 2022: AIG said it had exited the admitted homeowners market in some states and would move homeowners and possibly other products to the nonadmitted (excess and surplus lines) market in more states.
  • February 2023: AIG agreed with Stone Point Capital to form an independent MGA; PCG staff, led by president and CEO Kathleen Zortman, would move to it, with capacity from AIG and Syndicate 2019.
  • 2023: The deal was finalized in the spring and closed in July 2023, and PCG was rebranded Private Client Select.
  • July 2024: Ryan Specialty became PCS's exclusive wholesale broker for high- and ultra-high-net-worth business. AIG agreed to keep providing capacity and delegated authority and to supply excess and surplus lines policies in all 50 states through a new carrier, Marbleshore Specialty Insurance Company, subject to regulatory approval.
  • January 2025: Ross Bowie, previously president and chief risk officer, was named CEO, succeeding interim CEO Christopher Flatt.
  • January 2026: Ross Buchmueller, founder and former CEO of rival PURE Insurance, became chair of the PCS board.

Auto insurance coverage

PCS's automobile coverage is designed for households with many or valuable vehicles, with "unlimited vehicles" on one policy, from daily drivers to car collections, motorcycles and golf carts. Its highlighted features are:

  • Agreed value: PCS works with you to set each vehicle's value at the start, and that value is paid without depreciation after a total loss. See agreed value.
  • OEM parts: repairs prioritize original equipment manufacturer parts whenever available; see OEM parts endorsements.
  • Rental vehicles: a wide selection of rental cars suited to the client's lifestyle while a car is being repaired.
  • Cash settlement: PCS says it will consider a cash settlement when repair timelines become unreasonable, even if the car is not a total loss.

Liability limits for high-net-worth clients are usually extended with a separate excess liability policy, which PCS also writes; see umbrella insurance.

Discounts and programs

PCS does not publish auto discounts or a telematics program. Its value proposition is coverage breadth and service, including risk management services and family office services for clients with complex assets. Pricing is negotiated through your broker as part of the overall account; the guide to high-net-worth auto insurance explains how these programs are priced and packaged.

Claims

Claims can be reported 24/7 at 888-760-9195 in the U.S. or +1-302-482-6000 from abroad. Brokers report new losses by email to a Sedgwick-hosted address listed on PCS's contact page. Billing questions go to 888-978-5371 (8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern), and general service requests to [email protected]. Clients can also use an online portal for billing and support.

Ratings and reputation

Because PCS policies are issued by AIG insurers, the relevant financial strength rating is AIG's. In November 2025 AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a+" issuer credit rating of AIG's property and casualty subsidiaries and revised the outlook to positive, citing improved underwriting performance.

J.D. Power's U.S. Auto Insurance Study does not rank PCS or other private-client carriers. The frequent changes in structure, leadership and carrier arrangements since 2022 are worth discussing with your broker, particularly whether a given policy is written on an admitted AIG company or on a nonadmitted, excess and surplus lines basis, which generally affects whether a state guaranty fund would protect you if the insurer failed; see what happens if an insurer goes insolvent.

Who it suits

PCS suits affluent households that already work with a broker, own several valuable or collectible vehicles, and want agreed-value, OEM-parts coverage coordinated with home, art, yacht and excess liability policies. It is not built for drivers with one or two ordinary cars, for anyone who wants to buy directly, or for people who prefer a carrier that markets under a single familiar brand. Compare it with Chubb, PURE and Berkley One.

  • Strengths: Policies backed by AIG companies rated A (Excellent) with a positive outlook; agreed-value and OEM-parts coverage; unlimited vehicles on one policy; 24/7 claims line; access to risk management services.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only through brokers; no published discounts; a still-evolving business with several ownership and leadership changes since 2023; some lines moved to a nonadmitted (surplus lines) basis.
