Overview

Chubb is one of the world's largest property and casualty insurers, but in U.S. personal auto it plays a narrow, deliberate role: it insures the cars of affluent and high-net-worth households, usually alongside their homes, jewelry, art and collector vehicles. Its auto policies are sold through independent agents and brokers rather than directly to the public, and they are priced and built for drivers who want more coverage than a mass-market policy offers.

Chubb ranked #31 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.12 billion in premiums and a 0.30% share. That figure is small next to the national giants, which reflects the niche Chubb serves rather than its overall size: parent company Chubb Limited operates in 54 countries and territories, employs about 45,000 people and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (ticker CB). Chubb describes itself as the leading personal lines insurer for high-net-worth families in the U.S.

Chubb Limited's executive offices are in Zurich, Switzerland. Its main U.S. offices include 550 Madison Avenue in New York and 202 Halls Mill Road in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.

History

Today's Chubb combines two long histories. The Chubb Corporation traces its origins to 1882, when Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy opened a marine underwriting business, Chubb & Son, in New York City's seaport district. Percy Chubb organized the Federal Insurance Company in New Jersey in 1901. A company that began as Lloyds of Minneapolis, later renamed Great Northern Insurance Company, started offering auto liability insurance in 1913 and was acquired by Chubb in 1960.

Chubb formed a personal lines department in 1956, created The Chubb Corporation as a holding company in 1967, and in 1976 narrowed its personal lines strategy to explicitly serve high-net-worth clients. In 1986 it launched the Masterpiece policy, which became its signature product for wealthy households and still frames its auto coverage.

The other half of the company is ACE Limited, formed in 1985 to supply excess liability and directors-and-officers coverage during a capacity crisis. ACE bought CIGNA's property and casualty business, including the Insurance Company of North America (founded in Philadelphia in 1792), in 1999. In 2016 ACE acquired The Chubb Corporation and the combined company adopted the Chubb name.

Auto insurance coverage

A Chubb auto policy includes the standard pieces: bodily injury and property damage liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection and, in states that require it, personal injury protection. What sets it apart are the features layered on top:

  • OEM parts. After a covered accident, Chubb says it always pays for original equipment manufacturer parts rather than aftermarket substitutes, and its Collision Repair Experts oversee repairs (see OEM parts).
  • Agreed value. Clients can buy coverage where the car's value is set and guaranteed in advance. If the car is totaled or stolen, Chubb pays the agreed value or market value, whichever is greater, and waives the deductible.
  • High limits. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is available up to $10 million.
  • Rental cars. After a covered accident there is no per-day limit on a substitute vehicle, up to $15,000 in total, and rental car coverage applies worldwide.
  • Classic cars. Collector vehicles at least 30 years old, part of a collection or from limited production runs are insured under a separate classic car policy.

Chubb notes that not all products are available in all jurisdictions, and coverage depends on the policy as issued.

Discounts and programs

Chubb's usage-based program is SafeLane, built into the Chubb Mobile app for Masterpiece auto policyholders. Enrolling earns a participation discount of up to 10%. The app then measures speed, phone use and braking for each enrolled driver over at least 91 days or 500 miles, and the household can earn a discount of up to 20% that replaces the participation discount at renewal. Drivers in the household see each other's scores but not trip routes. As of October 2026 Chubb listed SafeLane in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin. It is not available on classic car policies. See how usage-based programs work.

Beyond SafeLane, Chubb clients may qualify for portfolio discounts when home and auto are insured together, and for a customer loyalty discount. Chubb's auto pages do not advertise the mass-market discounts many carriers list, such as good student or paperless billing.

Claims

Chubb reports new claims 24 hours a day at 800-252-4670 (1-800-CLAIMS-0), and claims can also be started online or in the Chubb Mobile app. Its claims teams operate in 54 countries, which matters for clients who drive or rent cars abroad. Policyholders can use body shops that are OEM-trained and use manufacturer-recommended tools and materials, and Chubb's Collision Repair Experts check details such as backup cameras and paint matching. Chubb says it tries to remove personal data from totaled vehicles it retains in a settlement, though that is not always possible.

Ratings and reputation

Chubb's financial strength ratings are among the highest in the industry. As of September 24, 2026, AM Best rated Federal Insurance Company, Great Northern Insurance Company, Pacific Indemnity Company, Vigilant Insurance Company and Chubb's other U.S. property-casualty companies A++ (Superior); S&P rated them AA and Moody's Aa2, all with stable outlooks (see how AM Best ratings work).

For auto service, the main outside benchmark Chubb publishes is the CRASH Network's 2026 Insurer Report Card, a survey of collision repair professionals, in which Chubb says it ranked first among national U.S. auto insurers for the seventh year in a row. Because its policies are written through several U.S. companies and sold by agents, shoppers who want complaint data should look up the specific underwriting company named on a quote with their state insurance department.

Who it suits

Chubb suits households with expensive vehicles, significant assets to protect and an independent agent who already handles their home or valuables coverage. Its auto policy is designed to work with a high-limit umbrella policy and to restore a car to factory condition. It is a poor fit for drivers shopping mainly on price, for anyone who wants to buy directly online, or for drivers with a weak record who need a nonstandard carrier. Compare it with other private-client carriers such as PURE and AIG Private Client; the guide to high-net-worth auto insurance explains the category.

  • Strengths: A++ (Superior) AM Best rating as of September 2026; OEM parts and agreed-value coverage; uninsured motorist limits up to $10 million; rental cars with no daily cap up to $15,000; worldwide claims service.
  • Weaknesses: Sold only through agents and brokers, with no direct online purchase; built for high-value households, so premiums are not aimed at budget shoppers; SafeLane is limited to listed states and excludes classic cars; few mass-market discounts.
