American National (Farm Family) auto insurance

Overview

The NAIC lists this group as "Brookfield Wealth Solutions Group," but the auto policies behind it come from American National, the Texas-founded insurer that Brookfield bought in 2022, and its property and casualty affiliates. The group ranked #64 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $309.8 million, or 0.08% of the national market.

Shoppers should know that the brand is changing. American National's website now says it writes annuity and pension products and no longer sells life insurance, and that information about its farm and ranch, business and other property and casualty products "has moved to the new Farm Family brand website." Farm Family says it is transitioning the brand name for these lines from American National to Farm Family. The Farm Family site lists three product lines: farm and ranch, business, and auto.

Coverage is underwritten by American National Property And Casualty Company and American National General Insurance Company, both of Springfield, Missouri; United Farm Family Insurance Company of Glenmont, New York; and Argonaut Insurance Company, an affiliate based in Chicago. In Texas the group also has American National Lloyds and American National County Mutual. Policies are sold through local agents rather than online.

History

American National Insurance Company was founded in Galveston, Texas, in 1905 by financier William Lewis Moody Jr. and grew into a large life, annuity and health insurer. It later built a property and casualty operation centered on American National Property And Casualty Company in Springfield, Missouri. Farm Family, formed by farmers in the 1950s and based in Glenmont, New York, became a leading farm insurer in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and joined American National's group.

Key recent events:

• 2022: Brookfield Reinsurance completed its all-cash acquisition of American National on May 22, 2022, paying $190 a share, or about $5.1 billion. Brookfield said American National would keep operating hubs in Springfield, Missouri, and the Albany, New York, area.
• 2023: Brookfield acquired Argo Group, a commercial specialty insurer, on November 16, 2023 for about $1.1 billion and later renamed it Clearbrook Group Holdings. Brookfield Wealth Solutions, as Brookfield Reinsurance is now called, says its property and casualty business operates through Clearbrook's subsidiaries.
• 2023–2026: American National opened a downtown Houston office in 2023 and now lists Houston as its headquarters. Its property and casualty lines moved to the Farm Family brand, whose website describes it as affiliated with Argo and American National.
• 2026: Brookfield Wealth Solutions (NYSE, TSX: BNT) shareholders approved a plan on July 16, 2026 under which Brookfield Corporation Ltd. (ticker BN) will become the group's single listed parent and BNT will be delisted; completion was expected by the end of 2026.

Brookfield Wealth Solutions reported $2.9 billion of property and casualty segment revenue in 2025. Jim Flinn is head of Farm Family.

Auto insurance coverage

Farm Family's auto page covers both personal and working vehicles. Towing and labor, rental reimbursement, glass repair and personal effects coverage are standard on all policies that carry physical damage (collision and comprehensive) coverage. For business and farm vehicles, the company offers protection for lost business income when a covered loss takes commercial vehicles out of service, coverage for custom equipment, and an endorsement package designed for wineries and distribution businesses.

Discounts and programs

Farm Family does not publish an auto discount list online; discounts are quoted by your agent. Its main program is the newly launched Enhanced Solutions Program, which connects farm and business customers with outside providers offering safety and risk tools at preferred pricing. Partners announced so far include Azuga, a fleet-tracking service for businesses with multiple vehicles, and PrevTech, an electrical monitoring system for farm buildings. There is no consumer telematics or usage-based auto program on its sites.

Claims are handled 24 hours a day at 800-333-2860, the same number American National lists for homeowners and auto claims. Policyholders can also file online after logging in to their American National account, and non-customers can start a claim as a guest. Ratings and reputation

As of December 31, 2025, AM Best rated American National Property And Casualty Company, American National General, American National Lloyds, American National County Mutual and United Farm Family Insurance Company A (Excellent) with stable outlooks, according to Brookfield Wealth Solutions' 2025 annual report on Form 20-F.

American National does not appear in the Central, Texas, Southwest, Southeast or Mid-Atlantic regional rankings of J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study (June 2026). The ongoing rebrand, two websites and a parent company focused on annuities make it harder than usual to find product details online.

Who it suits

This group suits farmers, ranchers and small-business owners who want their personal and working vehicles insured alongside the farm or business through a local agent, backed by companies with A (Excellent) ratings. Drivers who want to compare prices online, see published discounts or use a telematics program will find larger personal-lines carriers easier to shop.
