Overview

Grange Insurance is a mutual property and casualty insurer based in Columbus, Ohio. It ranked #49 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $606.9 million in auto premiums and a 0.16% national share, reported under the NAIC's Grange Mutual Casualty Group.

The lead company, founded as Grange Mutual Casualty Company and now named Grange Insurance Company, works with its affiliate Integrity Insurance, another Midwest mutual it has been affiliated with since 2001. Together they offer auto insurance in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin, and the group serves home and business policyholders in Michigan and South Carolina as well. Grange reports more than 675,000 customers based on policies in force, $3.4 billion in assets and more than $1.59 billion in annual revenue. It sells only through independent agents, who can compare Grange with other insurers they represent.

Grange is in a leadership transition: John Ammendola, chief executive for 12 years, plans to retire on March 1, 2027, when Ryan Michel, the company's chief property and casualty officer, takes over.

History

Grange's story begins in 1930, when John Haaf, a Summit County, Ohio, farmer and member of the Ohio State Grange, objected to his six-month auto premium rising from $10 to $12 despite a clean record. He pitched low-cost auto insurance to fellow Grange members, and from February 1933 an arrangement with Town and Village Insurance Company Services wrote auto coverage for them. On March 25, 1935, Grange Mutual Casualty Company was formed and took over that book of business.

Grange added fire insurance in 1955, and in 1958 its board voted to sell beyond Ohio and beyond Grange members. It entered Georgia in 1960, then Kentucky and Tennessee, and launched Grange Life Insurance Company in 1968. The affiliation with Integrity Mutual began in 2001, annual premium first passed $1 billion in 2003, and surplus reached $1 billion in 2013. In 2018 Grange agreed to sell Grange Life to Kansas City Life for $77.2 million and refocused on property and casualty insurance. During the COVID-19 pandemic it returned 25% of premium to personal auto policyholders.

Auto insurance coverage

Grange's auto policy covers liability, collision, comprehensive, medical payments and personal injury protection where required, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Optional coverages include:

  • Roadside assistance and rental reimbursement
  • New car replacement for vehicles two years old or newer that are totaled in a covered accident
  • Full glass coverage with no deductible for windshield damage
  • Loan/lease gap coverage
  • An OEM parts endorsement that requires original manufacturer parts when available
  • Identity theft coverage, and pet injury and mobile device coverage
  • Personal umbrella coverage, plus discounts for bundling boats, RVs and motorcycles

Discounts and programs

Grange's auto discounts include:

  • Accident forgiveness, so rates do not rise after your first at-fault accident
  • Multi-policy discount for bundling with home, condo or renters coverage
  • Good student and away-at-school discounts
  • Legacy loyalty discount for young customers who leave a parent's Grange policy for their own
  • Safety technology discount for vehicles with automatic emergency braking or blind spot warning
  • Paid-in-full, prompt payer, advance quote and paperless discounts
  • A "new beginnings" discount for customers going through a divorce

Grange's website does not list a telematics or usage-based insurance program. Coverages and discounts vary by state.

Claims

Auto claims can be reported by phone at 800-445-3030, online or through the Grange Mobile app, and claim status is available at 800-686-0025. Glass claims have their own line, 800-951-9734. For minor damage, Grange's Easy-Snap service lets you photograph the car yourself: a claims representative texts a secure link, you upload nine required photos (four corners, three damage shots, the VIN and the odometer) through the app or website, and appraisers produce an estimate and issue payment for covered losses. Grange's site also includes a repair shop locator and an explanation of each step of the claims process.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best reaffirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating and stable outlook for Grange and Integrity in September 2026, along with an issuer credit rating of "a+", according to Grange; AM Best also kept its assessment of Grange's innovation as "Prominent." AM Best's last detailed press release on the Grange pool, from May 2022, credited the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization while noting that inflation and higher loss severity were pressuring results.

In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Grange Insurance scored 652 in the North Central region (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin), tied with COUNTRY Financial and State Farm for sixth of 20 ranked brands and above the 645 regional average; Erie Insurance led with 688. Grange is not ranked in the Southeast region, where it also sells.

Who it suits

Grange suits drivers in its 11 auto states who want an independent agent's help and a mutual insurer with a deep menu of add-ons. Families with teen and college drivers get specific discounts, and owners of newer cars can protect themselves with new car replacement, OEM parts and full glass coverage.

  • Strengths: Above-average 2026 J.D. Power score in the North Central region; accident forgiveness plus new car replacement, OEM parts and full glass options; Easy-Snap photo claims for minor damage; A (Excellent) rating reaffirmed in 2026.
  • Weaknesses: Auto coverage limited to 11 states and sold only through agents; no telematics program; a chief executive transition in March 2027; not ranked by J.D. Power in the Southeast, so there is less independent satisfaction data there.
