Overview

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is the insurance arm of Indiana Farm Bureau, the state's farm organization. It sells auto, home, farm, business and life insurance only in Indiana. Property and casualty policies, including auto, are underwritten by United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company, a mutual insurer; life insurance comes from United Home Life Insurance Company. The group ranked #57 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $435.7 million, or 0.12% of the national market.

The company has more than 430 agents and 1,200 employees, with agents in all 92 Indiana counties, and serves customers in local offices, by phone and online. As with most Farm Bureau insurers, you must join the Farm Bureau first. The company's FAQ says membership in Indiana Farm Bureau is required to buy auto, home, renters, farm and most other policies. A primary membership costs $36 a year, according to the membership page, and anyone who wants to support Indiana agriculture can join. You do not have to be a farmer.

History

Indiana Farm Bureau established its insurance company on October 17, 1934, to give Hoosier farmers better insurance options. It has since broadened from farm coverage to home, auto, life, crop, business and renters insurance for all Indiana residents. Membership in the Farm Bureau also brings non-insurance benefits, including the group's magazines, a $2,000 accidental death benefit and discounts with outside companies. That link between a farm organization and an insurer is common across the country and is explained in our guide to how Farm Bureau insurance works. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is a separate company from Farm Bureau insurers in other states, such as Farm Bureau Financial Services in Iowa and the Midwest. Kevin Murphy is executive vice president and chief executive officer.

Auto insurance coverage

Auto policies cover cars and pickup trucks, and separate coverage is available for RVs, campers, ATVs and motorcycles. The core coverages are liability, auto damage (collision and comprehensive), medical payments and uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury. Medical payments also applies if you are hurt in a car you do not own or are struck as a pedestrian. Indiana Farm Bureau also offers uninsured motorist property damage, which pays for damage to your car caused by an uninsured driver, and optional roadside assistance.

Discounts and programs

Indiana Farm Bureau publishes one of the longer discount lists among regional insurers:

  • Accident Free: up to 30% depending on how long your auto policy has been continuously insured with the company, and it also earns accident forgiveness protection.
  • DriveTrend: 10% to 15% for using the company's DriveTrend smartphone telematics app, based on your driving habits.
  • Drive Less, Save More: 1% to 10% per vehicle based on annual mileage up to 12,000 miles.
  • Driver Education: 15% for drivers up to age 21 who complete a state-approved driver education course.
  • Auto + Life: an extra 2% with a term life policy or 4% with a whole life policy from the company.
  • Agribusiness: 10% for employees of qualifying agricultural companies, plus a Farm Rate Program for vehicles garaged on a farm.
  • Other discounts: multi-line (the company advertises up to 18% for insuring both auto and home), paperless (5%), advance quote, full payment, loyalty, multi-car, new business, top scholar, youthful driver and vehicle safety equipment.

Claims

Auto claims can be reported online at any time or by calling 800-723-3276. Before you call, have the date, location and description of the accident, the vehicles involved, the names of everyone involved including witnesses, and the police report information. Each claim is assigned to a claims representative, who contacts you, gathers any additional information and investigates. The company also runs a claims satisfaction survey for customers who have filed a claim.

Ratings and reputation

According to the company's website, AM Best rates United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company A (Excellent), a rating it has held for five consecutive years. The life company, United Home Life, has held an A (Excellent) rating for 65 consecutive years. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is a single-state insurer and is not among the brands J.D. Power ranks in its regional auto insurance studies. Complaint data can be checked with the Indiana Department of Insurance; see how the NAIC complaint index works.

Who it suits

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance suits Indiana residents who want a local agent, can bundle auto with home or farm coverage, and will use its long discount list, such as Accident Free, DriveTrend and mileage-based savings. The membership requirement adds a small yearly cost, and the company cannot follow you if you move out of state.

  • Strengths: Agents in every Indiana county; up to 30% Accident Free discount with accident forgiveness; DriveTrend telematics and a low-mileage discount; farm-specific rates; A (Excellent) AM Best rating.
  • Weaknesses: Indiana only; Farm Bureau membership required (about $36 a year); no J.D. Power ranking to compare service; some discounts depend on buying other products from the company.
