Overview
Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance (KFB) is the insurance company of the Kentucky Farm Bureau, and it sells only in Kentucky. It ranked #41 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $874.8 million in auto premiums and a 0.24% national share. Almost all of that business is concentrated in one state, which makes KFB a major presence in Kentucky auto insurance even though it is small nationally.
The lead company, Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, is a mutual owned by its policyholders and headquartered in Louisville. KFB describes itself as the largest property and casualty insurer domiciled in Kentucky. It sells auto, home, farm, life and health coverage through its own statewide agency force, with agents in all 120 Kentucky counties, much like the captive agent model used by other Farm Bureau insurers. Online quote requests are handled by staff in Kentucky and then completed by a local agent. KFB refers to its policyholders as members, reflecting its tie to the Farm Bureau federation; the guide to how Farm Bureau insurance works explains that relationship.
History
The Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation was organized at a meeting in Louisville in November 1919 and grew into one of the largest state Farm Bureaus, with hundreds of thousands of members. Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company followed in 1943, formed to make sure families across the Commonwealth had access to quality insurance coverage. Today the KFB companies offer home, auto, farm, life and health coverage as well as retirement planning.
KFB has stayed a single-state company. It now operates 15 regional claims offices and keeps an agency presence in every county. That concentration has become a financial pressure point: AM Best cut the company's long-term issuer credit rating in April 2023 and lowered its financial strength rating in June 2025, citing the growing frequency and severity of weather losses for an insurer whose risks are all in one state.
Auto insurance coverage
KFB writes personal and business auto policies for Kentucky residents, and coverage applies anywhere in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico. The published coverage menu is traditional:
- Bodily injury and property damage liability
- Collision and "other than collision" (comprehensive) physical damage coverage
- Uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage
- Personal injury protection, which matters in Kentucky because it is a choice no-fault state
- Medical payments, towing and labor, and rental reimbursement or transportation expense coverage
KFB's auto page does not advertise newer endorsements such as new-car replacement, gap coverage or accident forgiveness, so drivers who want those should ask an agent before switching. Coverage is subject to eligibility, and KFB says it may cancel policies for drivers who become high risk, for example after multiple claims in a short period or a drunk-driving accident.
Discounts and programs
KFB's telematics program is DriveRight Mobile, a smartphone app for iOS and Android. After an agent enrolls you, the app records trips in the background and scores hard braking, phone distraction, speeding, harsh acceleration and hard cornering. Eligible policyholders can save up to 5% after logging three trips, applied at new business or renewal to the vehicle the enrolled driver is rated on. The app also sends hail alerts up to 60 minutes ahead of predicted large hail. Unlike some usage-based programs, KFB's pages describe only the discount and do not mention surcharges for poor driving scores.
Other auto discounts listed by KFB:
- Safe driver: rewards drivers who go three, five or eight years without an at-fault accident or claim, climbing to as much as 25%
- Active property policy (bundle): auto plus a homeowners, mobile home or farm policy with KFB
- Good student (B average or better) and driver's training for young drivers, though the two cannot be combined for drivers aged 21 to 24
- Auto safety devices, multi-vehicle and umbrella policy discounts
- School bus driver discount for certified drivers
- Senior operator accident prevention course (drivers 55 and older) and military defensive driving course discounts; court-ordered courses do not qualify
Claims
During business hours, KFB asks policyholders to report auto claims to their local agent. After hours, the claims hotline at 866-532-2524 is staffed weekdays from 4:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. Eastern and around the clock on weekends and holidays. Claims can also be filed online at any time through the my.kyfb.com member portal.
Each claim is routed to the nearest of the 15 regional claims offices, and KFB says a claim representative typically makes contact within 24 to 48 hours. Its preferred-vendor program, Customer Assist, offers repair partners across the state, but policyholders may choose any shop. KFB treats a vehicle as a total loss when the repair estimate exceeds 75% of its actual cash value. Accidents outside Kentucky are assigned to adjusters KFB works with nationwide.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best downgraded Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual's financial strength rating to A- (Excellent) from A (Excellent) in June 2025 and revised the outlook to stable. The agency said the company's balance sheet remains in its strongest category, but described operating results as marginal because of elevated weather losses over several years, a pattern that continued into 2025. KFB's own ratings page still listed the A- rating in October 2026.
Customer satisfaction is a relative strength. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance scored 662 in the Southeast region, fourth of 17 ranked brands and above the 659 regional average; Erie Insurance led the region with 691. KFB is not among the brands ranked in J.D. Power's national auto claims satisfaction study, which covers larger insurers.
Who it suits
KFB fits Kentucky drivers who value a nearby agent, want auto, home and farm coverage from one company, and are comfortable with a traditional product rather than a long list of add-on endorsements. Its satisfaction scores compare well with national carriers in the region, but its single-state footprint is now visible in its financial strength rating.
- Strengths: Agents in every Kentucky county and 15 regional claims offices; above-average 2026 J.D. Power score in the Southeast; safe-driver discount of up to 25% plus a simple telematics discount; AM Best still rates its capitalization at the strongest level.
- Weaknesses: Sold only in Kentucky, so a move out of state means changing insurers; financial strength rating lowered to A- in 2025 because of weather losses; daytime phone reports go through your agent, and the claims hotline covers only evenings, nights and weekends; no advertised accident forgiveness or new-car replacement coverage.
