Overview
"Tiptree Financial Group" is the NAIC group under which Fortegra's U.S. property and casualty insurers reported their 2025 premiums. It ranked #89 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $168.3 million in auto premium and a 0.05% national share.
Two things make this listing different from a normal car insurer. First, the owner has changed: Tiptree Inc. sold The Fortegra Group to South Korea's DB Insurance Co., Ltd., in a deal announced on September 26, 2025, and completed on May 29, 2026, so the Tiptree name no longer applies. Second, very little of the premium is ordinary driver coverage. NAIC figures show that about $159 million of the group's $168.3 million in 2025 private passenger auto premium was physical damage coverage, with only a small amount of liability insurance.
That profile matches Fortegra's lender-related business. Its credit protection line includes "automobile damage insurance" protecting loans secured by vehicles against physical damage or loss, and lender-placed insurance protecting lenders' auto portfolios. Tiptree's 2024 annual report described Fortegra's collateral protection products as covering a lender's collateral against comprehensive losses and, when the collateral is a car, collision losses. The same report said Fortegra had "strategically and intentionally de-emphasized non-standard auto coverage," offering it only on a limited basis through select partners.
You would usually encounter Fortegra through a car loan, a dealer or a program run by a managing general agent, not by shopping for a policy.
History
Fortegra began in 1978 as Life of the South, a regional monoline insurer. It took the name Fortegra Financial in 2010, when it went public, and was acquired by Tiptree in 2014. It expanded into Europe in 2018, launched the excess and surplus lines carrier Fortegra Specialty Insurance Company in 2020, and received a strategic investment from Warburg Pincus in 2022.
DB Insurance, founded in 1962 as Korea's first public automobile insurer, bought 100% of Fortegra from Tiptree and Warburg Pincus for about $1.65 billion in cash. Fortegra says it continues to operate independently with its existing leadership, led by Chairman and CEO Richard Kahlbaugh.
Fortegra's U.S. property and casualty companies, which appear on policies and declarations pages, are Lyndon Southern Insurance Company, Insurance Company of the South, Response Indemnity Company of California, Blue Ridge Indemnity Company and Fortegra Specialty Insurance Company. Its life and health insurers include Life of the South Insurance Company. Fortegra also sells vehicle service contracts, GAP waivers and other auto finance-and-insurance products through dealers, plus motor clubs such as United Motor Club and Continental Car Club.
Auto insurance coverage
Fortegra does not sell a standard personal auto policy to the public. Its auto-related products fall into three groups:
- Collateral and lender protection. Physical damage coverage on vehicles that secure loans, designed mainly to protect the lender's interest. If a lender places this coverage because you did not keep your own collision and comprehensive, it typically protects the loan balance, not you, and does not include liability coverage. See insurance requirements for a financed car.
- Nonstandard auto through partners. A limited amount of nonstandard auto written through select program partners, where the MGA handles sales and service and a Fortegra company is the insurer.
- Auto finance products. Vehicle service contracts, GAP, tire and wheel, key replacement, windshield and dent-and-ding products sold at dealerships. These are contracts or waivers rather than auto insurance policies.
Discounts and programs
Fortegra publishes no consumer auto discounts or telematics program. Pricing for program business is set with the MGA or lender that sells it. If coverage was placed by your lender, the most effective way to lower the cost is usually to buy your own auto policy with collision and comprehensive and send proof to the lender so the placed coverage can be cancelled.
Claims
Fortegra lists separate claims lines by product, generally staffed Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern:
- Specialty program policies: 844-758-8210 or [email protected]. For billing or policy changes, contact the program administrator named on your declarations page.
- Credit protection: 855-204-8116; submit claims through your lender or bank.
- Vehicle service contracts: 877-686-9887. Ancillary products (tire and wheel, key, windshield, dent): 877-687-1405. GAP: 877-687-1431.
- Roadside assistance for Fortegra motor club and service contract customers: 844-201-5313, available 24/7.
Ratings and reputation
On August 6, 2026, AM Best upgraded the financial strength ratings of Fortegra's insurance subsidiaries, including Lyndon Southern, Insurance Company of the South, Response Indemnity Company of California, Blue Ridge Indemnity and Fortegra Specialty, from A- (Excellent) to A (Excellent), citing Fortegra's importance to DB Insurance, which is rated A+ (Superior). KBRA also raised its ratings. See AM Best ratings explained.
Fortegra is not among the insurers named in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Complaint records for the specific Fortegra company named on a policy can be checked through the NAIC's consumer insurance search or your state insurance department.
Who it suits
Fortegra is relevant mainly if your lender, dealer or program administrator has placed coverage with one of its companies. In that case it is a well-capitalized, A-rated insurer, but the product may protect the lender more than you. Drivers shopping for their own auto policy should look to standard or nonstandard carriers instead; see fronting carriers and who really insures you.
- Strengths: A (Excellent) AM Best rating after the August 2026 upgrade; backing of DB Insurance; dedicated claims lines for each product type.
- Weaknesses: Not a consumer auto insurer you can buy directly; most of its auto premium is lender-oriented physical damage coverage without liability protection; service and billing run through third-party administrators; ownership changed in May 2026.
