Overview

Munich Re, the German company that is one of the world's largest reinsurers, does not sell everyday car insurance to U.S. drivers under its own name. In the NAIC's private passenger auto ranking, all of Munich Re's U.S. insurance companies are counted together as the "Munich Re Group." The part of that group that sells personal vehicle insurance to consumers is American Modern Insurance Group, a specialty insurer in Amelia, Ohio, near Cincinnati, that covers collector cars, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, golf carts, boats, manufactured homes and other risks that standard carriers often decline.

The Munich Re Group ranked #80 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $223.7 million in personal auto premium (about 0.06% of the U.S. market). Munich Re does not publish how that figure splits among its U.S. companies. Besides American Modern, the U.S. group includes carriers that serve businesses and partners rather than individual drivers; for example, a 2021 Rhode Island examination described Digital Advantage Insurance Company, owned by Munich Re's digital partners unit, as focused on small business and commercial auto insurance written through insurtech program administrators.

American Modern says it writes admitted products in all 50 states through its licensed subsidiaries and has about $2.2 billion in premium volume across all lines. It is part of Munich Re's global specialty insurance division and sells through insurance agents, including through a dedicated storefront for Allstate agents; consumers are directed to an agent for quotes.

History

American Modern traces its roots to The Midland Company, which began by financing automobile purchases and became one of the first lenders to specialize in financing manufactured homes. Between the 1960s and 1980s it moved into mobile home insurance, forming American Modern Home Insurance Company and American Family Home Insurance Company, and after a brief venture into manufacturing it refocused on insurance. The company says it has been in insurance since 1965.

In the 1990s it added watercraft, collector car, motorcycle, ATV and snowmobile coverage, and American Modern Insurance Group, Inc. was formed in 1994. Munich Re acquired American Modern in 2008 to diversify beyond reinsurance into primary insurance. In 2013 it began a company-wide transformation project aimed at replacing a disjointed technology landscape and revamping fragmented product lines. Kevin Morreale is interim president and CEO.

Today American Modern's insurers include American Modern Property and Casualty Insurance Company, American Modern Home Insurance Company, American Family Home Insurance Company, American Modern Select Insurance Company, American Southern Home Insurance Company and American Modern Lloyds Insurance Company.

Auto insurance coverage

American Modern's vehicle products are specialty policies, not a replacement for the policy on your everyday car.

Collector vehicles. The policy covers classics, antiques, muscle cars, exotics, street rods, custom and kit cars, replicas, late-model collector cars, military vehicles, fire engines, collectible farm equipment and restorations in progress. You and the company agree on the car's value, and in a total loss that agreed value is paid, including taxes and fees, minus the deductible. Included coverages are disaster relocation expenses, full safety glass, personal effects, pet protection, spare parts, towing and emergency expenses and travel loss; options include collision, medical payments, uninsured motorist, trailer physical damage, automobilia and appreciation of value security. Cars must be kept in a locked garage or building, and a newly acquired collector car is covered automatically up to $50,000 for 30 days. See classic and collector car insurance.

Motorsports. Policies cover touring, cruiser, sport and classic motorcycles, scooters and trikes, ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, golf carts, neighborhood electric vehicles, electric bicycles and snowmobiles. Most are covered at actual cash value; classic bikes can be insured at an agreed value, and bikes two model years old or newer qualify for replacement cost settlement. Accessories, personal effects and safety apparel, pet protection and towing are included.

Discounts and programs

American Modern advertises multiple-product discounts for customers who insure more than one item with it and encourages buyers to ask their agent about other savings. It does not publish a detailed discount list or offer a telematics program. Payment options include EZPay automatic payments on a date you choose between the 1st and the 28th of the month.

Ratings and reputation

On July 17, 2025, AM Best affirmed the A+ (Superior) financial strength rating of Munich Reinsurance Company and its rated subsidiaries, including American Modern Property and Casualty, American Modern Home, American Family Home, American Modern Select, American Southern Home and American Modern Lloyds, with a stable outlook. AM Best affirmed Munich Re's A+ (Superior) rating again in July 2026. A+ is AM Best's second-highest grade; see AM Best ratings explained.

J.D. Power's auto insurance studies rank standard auto insurers by region, and American Modern was not among the regional leaders named in the 2026 study. Complaint records for each American Modern company can be found on the NAIC's Consumer Information Source.

Who it suits

American Modern suits owners of collector cars, motorcycles, off-road vehicles and other recreational vehicles who want coverage built for those vehicles, such as agreed-value settlements and coverage for gear and spare parts, from a carrier backed by one of the world's largest reinsurers. It is not an option for insuring a household's daily drivers, and it is available only through agents.

  • Strengths: A+ (Superior) AM Best rating as part of Munich Re; agreed-value collector car coverage with automatic coverage for newly bought collector cars; covers an unusually wide range of vehicles; admitted in all 50 states.
  • Weaknesses: No standard daily-driver auto policy; no direct online purchase; collector cars must be garaged in a locked building; little published discount detail; most motorsports vehicles settle at actual cash value rather than replacement cost.
