Overview

Markel Group Inc. is a Virginia-based holding company with specialty insurance at its core, listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: MKL). It ranked #27 among U.S. private passenger auto insurers by 2025 direct premiums written according to NAIC market share data, with $1.43 billion in premiums and a 0.38% national share. Markel does not sell everyday car insurance for commuters and family cars, so most drivers will never see a Markel auto quote.

Its place in the ranking comes mainly from collector vehicles. Markel's subsidiary Essentia Insurance Company issues the U.S. collector-car policies sold by Hagerty, the classic-car insurance agency and enthusiast brand. Markel reported $1.03 billion of gross written premium attributable to Hagerty in 2025, up from $923 million in 2024. Since January 1, 2026, that business has been a fronting arrangement: Essentia remains the insurer named on the policy, but all of the risk is passed to Hagerty's own reinsurer. That is why this profile is classed with program and fronting carriers.

Markel also writes its own specialty personal lines, including motorcycle, boat and yacht, personal watercraft and recreational vehicle coverage, plus homeowners coverage for properties that do not qualify for standard policies. Separately, its State National unit in Bedford, Texas, provides fronting services for other carriers and automobile collateral protection coverage for lenders.

History

Markel says its business began with insuring jitney buses, the shared cars and small buses that carried paying passengers, when other insurers would not, more than 90 years ago. It grew into a global specialty insurer writing hard-to-place risks through its U.S. Wholesale and Specialty, Programs and Solutions, and International divisions.

The collector-car connection dates to January 2013, when Markel completed its purchase of Essentia Insurance Company from OneBeacon Insurance Group. Essentia already underwrote insurance exclusively for Hagerty, and it continued to do so under Markel. Markel also became a major Hagerty shareholder and owned 23% of Hagerty, Inc. at the end of 2025.

For years Markel kept part of the Hagerty risk and ceded the rest to Hagerty Reinsurance Limited, a Bermuda affiliate of Hagerty. In July 2025 Hagerty announced plans for Hagerty Re to take 100% of the premium while paying Markel an initial 2% fronting fee, and that arrangement took effect January 1, 2026. Thomas S. Gayner has been Markel Group's chief executive officer since January 2023.

Auto insurance coverage

Collector-vehicle owners buy coverage from Hagerty, not Markel. Hagerty's products cover classic and collector cars, collector trucks and SUVs, 1980-and-newer collectible vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, motorsport vehicles and boats. Hagerty's Guaranteed Value settles a covered total loss at an agreed value set when the policy is written, less any deductible and retained salvage, and its policies are designed for occasional pleasure use rather than daily driving. Hagerty's U.S. disclosures list Essentia Insurance Company among its underwriting companies, alongside two Nationwide companies. For how this kind of coverage differs from a standard policy, see classic and collector car insurance.

Under its own name, Markel's U.S. personal lines cover first- and third-party risks for motorcycles, personal watercraft and recreational vehicles. On its website, Markel currently directs motorcycle shoppers to a pay-per-mile product offered in collaboration with Voom.

Discounts and programs

Markel's personal auto-type products are priced as specialty programs rather than with a long list of standard discounts. The Voom motorcycle product charges a monthly base rate set by factors such as riding history, age and type of motorcycle, plus a few cents for each mile ridden, reported by photographing the odometer each month; it is a form of pay-per-mile insurance suited to seasonal riders. Hagerty offers a separate Hagerty Drivers Club membership with roadside service, a magazine and automotive discounts; Hagerty says buying insurance is not required to join.

Claims

Hagerty collector-car policyholders report claims by logging in at Hagerty.com, as Markel's claims page directs. For Markel's own U.S. policies, claims can be reported online, by email to [email protected] or by phone at 800-362-7535. Markel was named a 2026 Insurance Business America 5-Star Claims winner, an award based on input from agents and brokers.

Ratings and reputation

As of September 15, 2026, Markel lists AM Best financial strength ratings of A (Excellent) for its main insurance companies, including Essentia Insurance Company and Markel American Insurance Company, with a stable outlook, along with A+ ratings from S&P. Under the fronting arrangement, Essentia remains legally responsible for the Hagerty policies it issues even though the risk is ceded; Markel's annual report notes that Hagerty Re is not rated but that collateral held exceeded what it owed Markel at the end of 2025. Neither Markel nor Hagerty appeared in J.D. Power's 2026 auto insurance or 2025 auto claims rankings. See texas county mutuals and fronting carriers: who really insures you for why fronting arrangements matter to policyholders.

Who it suits

Markel matters mainly to people who insure a collector car through Hagerty, since Essentia is one of the insurers named on those U.S. policies, and to motorcyclists or boat owners shopping for specialty coverage. Anyone looking for standard coverage on a daily-driven car should shop mainstream carriers instead.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) AM Best ratings across its insurance companies; long-running partnership behind Hagerty's agreed-value collector-car coverage; pay-per-mile motorcycle option for low-mileage riders.
  • Weaknesses: No standard personal auto policy for everyday cars; collector-car service, pricing and claims run through Hagerty rather than Markel; since 2026 Markel keeps none of the Hagerty risk, so the program depends on Hagerty's reinsurer; not ranked in J.D. Power auto studies.
