The 100 largest auto insurance companies in the U.S.
Every one of the 100 largest U.S. auto insurers ranked by 2025 premiums from NAIC data, with market share, type, rating and a link to each profile.
State Farm and Progressive each wrote about $69 billion of U.S. private passenger auto insurance in 2025, and together held more than a third of the market. The five largest groups — State Farm, Progressive, GEICO's parent Berkshire Hathaway, Allstate and USAA — wrote about 65% of all premiums, and the top ten about 77%. Below them sit dozens of regional mutuals, Farm Bureau insurers, nonstandard specialists and digital newcomers that are small nationally but often among the biggest names in their own states.
This ranking lists all 100 by direct premiums written in 2025, using market share data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Industry-wide, insurers wrote about $371.59 billion of private passenger auto premium that year. Each name links to a full profile with phone numbers, headquarters, ratings, discounts, history and the latest news.
How the ranking works
- What is measured. Direct premiums written for private passenger auto liability and physical damage, the figure insurers report to regulators on their annual statements. It measures size, not price, quality or claims service.
- Groups, not brands. NAIC ranks insurance groups: all the companies under common ownership. GEICO is reported under its parent, Berkshire Hathaway; the three AAA insurance groups are separate entries because different clubs own them. A group may sell under several brand names — see who owns whom: car insurance brands and their parent companies.
- Some entries are not consumer brands. A handful of groups are fronting or program carriers, or Texas county mutuals, whose policies are sold under another company's name. Their profiles explain who actually sells the coverage — see texas county mutuals and fronting carriers: who really insures you.
- Source and date. All figures come from NAIC's 2025 Market Share Reports for Property/Casualty Groups and Companies, published in August 2026 (Total Private Passenger Auto, countrywide). Market share is each group's share of the industry total. Ratings in the table are as reported in each profile, with dates there.

What the list shows
A market of two giants and a long tail
The gap between the top of the list and the rest is enormous. The two leaders together held about 37% of the market; the 90 groups ranked 11th to 100th together held about 22%. By the time the ranking reaches #20, each group holds less than half of one percent of the national market. For a driver, that is not a reason to ignore smaller insurers: many of them are regional companies that concentrate on a few states, where they can rank in the top five. See regional car insurers: when smaller carriers can beat the giants.
Ownership is mixed
The list mixes publicly traded stock companies (Progressive, Allstate, Travelers), policyholder-owned mutuals (State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Amica, many regionals), reciprocal exchanges, member-owned associations such as USAA, and insurers owned by auto clubs and Farm Bureau federations. Ownership shapes how profits flow — mutuals and reciprocals can return them to policyholders as dividends — but it does not by itself make a company cheaper or better at claims. See mutual vs stock insurers: does ownership matter?.
How the companies sell
Some sell only through their own captive agents, others directly online and by phone, and many through independent agents who can quote several insurers at once. Which channel suits you depends on whether you want advice or speed; captive agents vs independent agents vs buying direct explains the trade-offs.

How to use this list when you shop
- Start with availability: many insurers on the list sell in only a few states. Each profile says where.
- Shortlist three to five companies of different kinds — a national direct writer, a company with local agents, and a strong regional or mutual insurer in your state.
- Check financial strength and complaints on each profile, or line them up with the compare auto insurers side by side.
- Get quotes for identical coverage and compare them with the car insurance quote comparison worksheet.
Size tells you a company can pay claims at scale; it does not tell you it will give you the best price or service. For that, read how to choose a car insurance company.
Source: NAIC, 2025 Market Share Reports for Property/Casualty Groups and Companies (August 2026), Total Private Passenger Auto. Groups ranked 101–125 in the same table include Mutual of Enumclaw, Mountain West Farm Bureau, Lemonade and Clearcover.
Key takeaways
- State Farm and Progressive each wrote about $69 billion in 2025; the top five groups held about 65% of U.S. auto premiums.
- NAIC ranks ownership groups, so one entry can cover several brands, and a few entries are fronting carriers rather than consumer brands.
- Below the top 20, each group holds less than 0.5% nationally, but many are leaders in their home states.
- Size is not price or service: shortlist by availability, ratings and complaints, then compare like-for-like quotes.
